SEOUL — North Korea appears poised to conduct its seventh nuclear test, contingent upon a decision by leader Kim Jong-un, as reported by lawmakers on Wednesday following a closed-door audit of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
If Kim decides to proceed with a nuclear test utilizing the No. 3 tunnel at Punggye-ri, it could be executed in a short timeframe, according to Representatives Park Sun-won and Lee Seong-kweun, who co-chair the parliamentary intelligence committee.
The last underground nuclear test conducted by North Korea occurred in 2017. Recent assessments indicate that Pyongyang is intensifying efforts to secure nuclear material and is establishing various types of manufacturing facilities for nuclear warheads.
In addition, North Korea appears to be preparing for the launch of a new spy satellite, which is expected to provide high-resolution imagery compared to its existing capabilities, with technological assistance from Russia.
The North successfully launched its first military spy satellite, the Malligyong-1, in November 2023 and has committed to launching three additional spy satellites in 2024. However, it has not launched another satellite since a rocket carrying one exploded shortly after takeoff in May of the previous year.
Furthermore, the agency reports that North Korea seems to be partially operating the previously shuttered Kaesong Industrial Complex, utilizing facilities for the production of everyday necessities.
Park also mentioned being briefed on reports indicating that North Korea had prepared for war following a South Korean military operation involving drone infiltration into Pyongyang in October of last year. He noted that North Korean residents were reportedly unsettled by the incident, prompting the regime to enhance its military readiness.
According to Park, the South Korean military had also deployed an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the military demarcation line and increased the presence of unmanned aerial vehicles along the border following the drone operation in October.

국방정보본부의 분석에 따르면, 북한은 핵 물질 확보를 위한 노력을 강화하고 있으며, 핵탄두 제조를 위한 다양한 유형의 시설을 구축하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
한편, 북한은 러시아의 기술 지원을 바탕으로 기존의 정찰위성보다 고해상도 이미지를 제공할 수 있는 새로운 정찰위성 발사를 준비하는 것으로 보인다.
북한은 2023년 11월 첫 군사 정찰위성인 말리기용-1을 성공적으로 발사했으며, 2024년에는 세 개의 추가 정찰위성을 발사할 계획을 세우고 있었다.
그러나 지난해 5월 위성을 실은 로켓이 발사 직후 폭발한 이후 추가 발사는 이루어지지 않았다.
국방정보본부에 따르면, 북한은 이제 폐쇄된 개성공단을 부분적으로 운영하며, 일상 필수품을 생산하는 시설을 가동하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.
박 의원은 또한 남한 군이 지난해 10월 북한으로의 드론 침투 작전을 명령한 이후 북한이 전쟁 준비를 했다는 보고를 받았다고 전했다.
박 의원은 브리핑에서 "북한 주민들이 드론 침투 이후 충격을 받았고, 북한이 전쟁 준비를 시작했다고 들었다"고 말했다.
또한 박 의원에 따르면, 남한 군은 지난 10월 드론 작전 이후 군사 분계선 근처에 AH-64 아파치 공격기를 비행시키고, 국경을 넘어 추가 무인 항공기를 배치했다고 전해졌다.
