A bean goose discovered in central Seoul has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, city officials announced on Wednesday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government reported that the wild bird, found sick in Seodaemun District and later deceased, was confirmed to be infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.
This incident marks the first detection of this virus strain in wild birds within Seoul in nearly three years, following the last reported case in January 2023.
According to officials, the bird was rescued on Thursday after a citizen report and was receiving treatment at a wildlife rescue center when it exhibited neurological symptoms and subsequently died.
Tests conducted by the National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control and Prevention detected the H5 antigen in the bird's carcass on Saturday, with final confirmation of the virus occurring on Tuesday.
In response to this finding, authorities have intensified disinfection measures and expanded monitoring of wild bird habitats in and around the area where the infected goose was discovered.

관계자에 따르면, 이 새는 목요일 시민의 신고로 구조되었고 야생 동물 구조 센터에서 치료를 받던 중 신경학적 증세를 보이다가 사망했다.
국립야생동물질병관리원에 의해 실시된 후속 검사에서 토요일 새의 사체에서 H5 항원이 검출되었으며, 화요일에 최종적으로 바이러스 감염이 확인되었다.
이에 따라 당국은 감염된 거위가 발견된 지역 내외의 야생 조류 서식지를 집중적으로 모니터링하고 소독 조치를 강화하고 있다고 시는 밝혔다.
