A couple was found dead inside a vehicle connected to a car-camping tent in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, after a passerby reported hearing only the sound of a motor coming from the car with no signs of movement inside.
According to police and fire authorities on Tuesday, the emergency call was made at 2:36 p.m. from a parking lot near the Yuilsa Trail entrance at Taebaeksan. The caller indicated that a tent attached to a parked vehicle was zipped shut, a motor was running, and no response was heard from the occupants.
Rescue personnel arrived and discovered a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s inside the vehicle. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police reported that the couple, who were married, had been car camping in the Mount Taebaek area the previous night. At the scene, authorities identified that a fuel-powered heater had been running inside the vehicle. The windows were shut, and the tent was sealed tightly to the car, resulting in a confined space. A doctor at Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital indicated that the circumstances “strongly suggest carbon monoxide poisoning.”
Police are investigating the precise cause of death, including whether the heater and the design of the attached tent created safety hazards.
As winter car camping and cold-weather trips become more prevalent, fire authorities have reiterated safety warnings, emphasizing that heaters used in enclosed spaces can rapidly lead to oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide accumulation. An official stated, “Heating in a sealed environment should never be attempted.”

경찰에 따르면, 두 사람은 결혼한 부부로, 전날 태백산 지역에서 차량 캠핑을 하고 있었던 것으로 전해졌다.
현장에서 당국은 차량 내부에서 연료 기반 히터가 작동 중인 것을 발견했다. 창문은 닫혀 있었고, 텐트는 차량에 단단히 밀착되어 있어 밀폐된 공간이 형성되었다. 춘천성심병원의 의사는 "이 상황은 일산화탄소 중독을 강하게 시사한다"고 밝혔다.
경찰은 히터와 부착된 텐트의 설계가 안전 위험을 초래했는지 여부를 포함하여 정확한 사망 원인을 조사하고 있다.
겨울철 차량 캠핑과 추운 날씨 여행이 늘어남에 따라, 소방당국은 안전 경고를 재차 강조하며 밀폐된 공간에서 사용되는 히터가 급속히 산소 고갈 및 일산화탄소 축적을 초래할 수 있다고 밝혔다. 한 관계자는 "밀폐된 환경에서 난방을 시도해서는 안 된다"고 말했다.
