Hanwha Eagles ace Cody Ponce was named the unanimous winner of the top pitching award in South Korean baseball on Thursday after leading the country's top league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts.
Ponce was awarded the 2025 Choi Dong-won Award, which recognizes the best pitcher in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) since its inception in 2014. The award honors the late KBO pitcher Choi Dong-won, who gained prominence with the Lotte Giants in the early 1980s.
This marks Ponce as the third consecutive foreign-born winner of the award and the sixth overall winner from outside Korea. The American right-hander will receive a trophy along with a prize of 20 million won ($13,930).
Ponce had an impressive debut season in the KBO, achieving the Triple Crown with 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA, and a league-record 252 strikeouts, surpassing the previous record of 225 strikeouts set by Ariel Miranda, the 2021 award winner.
Additionally, Ponce set a KBO record by winning his first 17 decisions in a row to start the season.
To be eligible for the award, candidates were required to meet specific criteria, including at least 25 starts, 180 innings pitched, 12 wins, 150 strikeouts, 15 quality starts, a sub-3.00 ERA, and 35 saves for relievers.
All eight members of the selection committee cast their first-place votes for Ponce, recognizing his dominant performance that led the Eagles to their first postseason appearance in seven years.
The award ceremony is scheduled for November 11 in Busan, Choi's hometown, commemorating his jersey number during his playing career.
