Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and the Archbishop of the Seoul Catholic Archdiocese expressed optimism regarding the participation of North Korean youth in the World Youth Day scheduled for August 2027 in Seoul. This sentiment was shared during a meeting at Myeongdong Cathedral.
Chung emphasized that the event could serve as a pivotal moment for peace on the Korean Peninsula, expressing hope that the archdiocese's desire for North Korean youth involvement would materialize.
The Archbishop acknowledged that even limited participation by North Korean youth would symbolize a positive step in inter-Korean relations and committed to exploring avenues to facilitate their involvement.
Additionally, the minister voiced hopes for Pope Leo XIV's potential visit to North Korea en route to South Korea for the festival, to which the Archbishop responded with a willingness to investigate different possibilities for such a visit.
Chung also articulated that a "de facto" unification of the Koreas should precede any legal or political unification. He described this as cooperation between South and North Korea as two peaceful entities, enabling the free movement of people, resources, and finances as a basis for real unification.

이는 서울 명동 성당에서 정 장관과 서울 대교구의 대주교인 피터 정 순택 대주교 간의 회의에서 이루어진 발언으로, 한국의 가톨릭 공동체는 2027년 8월에 세계 청년의 날을 서울에서 개최할 준비를 하고 있다.
정 장관은 "2027년에 한국에서 열리는 가톨릭 세계 청년의 날이 한반도의 평화를 위한 중대한 전환점이 되기를 바란다"며 "북한 청소년들의 참여에 대한 서울 대교구의 바람이 실현되기를 희망한다"고 말했다.
대주교는 북한 청소년들의 참여가 제한적일지라도 남북 관계에 상징적인 도움이 될 것이라며, 이를 실현하기 위한 방법을 모색하겠다고 약속했다.
또한, 장관은 카톨릭 축제를 위해 한국으로 가는 길에 교황 레오 14세가 북한을 방문할 것에 대한 기대를 expressed 했고, 대주교는 이를 실현하기 위해 "다양한 경로"를 탐구하겠다고 응답했다.
회의 중 정 장관은 남북한의 법적 또는 정치적 통일 전에 "사실상" 통일이 우선해야 한다고 강조했다.
남북한이 두 평화로운 나라로서 협력하고, 이에 따라 사람, 자금 및 자원의 자유로운 흐름이 이루어지는 것이 사실상 통일이라고 부처는 밝혔다.
