A rental car operator has been convicted of blackmailing a female K-pop group member and a male idol after recording a private moment between the two on a dashboard camera.
On Oct. 18, the Incheon District Court’s 14th Criminal Division, presided over by Judge Gong Woo-jin, sentenced the defendant, identified as C, to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, along with 120 hours of community service for extortion.
According to court documents, the case began last year when C rented a minivan to a member of a K-pop girl group. After checking the dashcam footage, C found a video showing her engaging in intimate physical contact with a male idol in the back seat.
C then sent threatening messages through the Chinese messenger app WeChat, saying, “What were you doing in the back seat? Isn’t that too much?” He also mentioned her group's name and demanded money equivalent to about half the car’s 47 million won (about $34,000) purchase price.
Frightened, she transferred money, but C continued his threats. The total amount extorted was around 9.79 million won ($7,100).
The court noted that C committed the offense while already serving a suspended sentence and said, “This is a clear case of extortion.” However, it added that the sentence took into account the fact that “the defendant returned most of the money.”

10월 18일 인천지방법원 제14형사부(재판장 공우진)는 피고인 C에게 8개월의 징역형을 선고했으며, 2년의 선고유예 및 120시간의 사회봉사를 명령했다.
법원 문서에 따르면, 사건은 지난해 C가 K-팝 걸그룹의 멤버에게 미니밴을 렌트하면서 시작됐다. C는 대시캠 영상을 확인하다가 뒷좌석에서 남성 아이돌과의 친밀한 신체 접촉을 보여주는 영상을 발견했다.
C는 이후 중국 메신저 앱 위챗을 통해 “뒤좌석에서 뭐하고 있었냐? 그건 좀 과한 것 아닌가?”라는 협박 메시지를 보냈으며, 그녀의 그룹 이름을 언급하며 차량 구매가격 4,700만 원(약 34,000달러)의 절반에 해당하는 금액을 요구했다.
두려움에 빠진 그녀는 돈을 이체했으나, C는 계속해서 협박을 이어갔다. 총 협박금액은 약 979만 원(7,100달러)에 달했다.
법원은 C가 이미 집행유예 중에 범행을 저질렀다고 언급하며 “이는 명백한 협박죄에 해당한다”고 밝혔다. 그러나 “피고인이 대부분의 돈을 반환한 점을 고려했다”고 덧붙였다.
