Singer Soyou, formerly of girl group Sistar, has reported experiencing racial discrimination during a flight from the U.S. to Korea, describing the incident as one of the most humiliating moments of her life. Her account has sparked renewed discussion on racial bias in international air travel.
In a social media post dated October 19, Soyou recounted her experience while traveling from Atlanta to Seoul after a schedule in New York. She stated, “I was extremely tired and simply asked for a Korean flight attendant to check the meal time.” However, she claimed that the purser took issue with her request and treated her as a problematic passenger.
The situation escalated when security personnel were called to address the matter. Soyou expressed her frustration, saying, “If I’m really the problem, I’ll get off the plane.” She endured cold looks and negative attitudes from the crew for the duration of the 15-hour flight.
Reflecting on the incident, she questioned whether it was an instance of racism, stating, “No one should ever be doubted or humiliated because of their race.” Soyou’s case follows several reports of Asian passengers facing discriminatory treatment by American airlines.
Concerns over racial bias in U.S. air travel have been rising. In August 2023, singer and actor Hyeri reported experiencing what she described as “unfair treatment” by a foreign airline after being forcibly downgraded from a first-class seat to economy without a refund. She noted that despite reserving her seats in advance, she was informed there were no first-class seats available, and the airline refused to refund the difference.
Hyeri criticized the airline's handling of the situation, stating, “It was such an absurd experience — please be careful when you fly.” At the time, the airline explained that involuntary reassignments were necessary due to an aircraft change for operational safety.
In another case, film director Timothy Chey filed a lawsuit against the same airline, alleging he faced racial slurs and was forcibly removed from a flight at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Chey claimed a gate agent made assumptions based on his ethnicity and demanded he serve as a translator, leading to a confrontation that resulted in police involvement and denial of boarding.
The lawsuit alleges discrimination, emotional distress, and breach of contract, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of passengers based on their race.

2023년 8월, 가수 겸 배우 혜리는 외국 항공사로부터 “부당한 대우”를 받았다고 밝히며, 퍼스트 클래스 좌석에서 이코노미 좌석으로 강제로 강등되었고 환불도 받지 못했다고 전했다.
그녀는 SNS에 자신의 티켓 사진을 공유하며 “1개월 반 전에 좌석을 예약하고 선택했지만, 퍼스트 클래스 좌석이 없다고 하여 이코노미로 강등되었습니다. 항공사는 차액을 환불하지 않겠다고 하며, 좌석이 마음에 들지 않으면 다음 비행기를 탑승하라고 했습니다.”라고 말했다.

당시 델타 항공은 퍼스트 클래스 승객 중 일부가 운영 안전을 위한 더 작은 모델로의 항공기 변경 때문에 자리가 재배정되었다고 설명했다.
또 다른 사례로, 항공 매체 PYOK은 3월에 영화 감독인 팀 챠이가 델타 항공을 상대로 인종적 비하 발언과 함께 뉴욕 라과디아 공항에서 비행기에서 강제 퇴거당했다고 소송을 제기했다고 보도했다.
챠이는 한 게이트 직원이 그에게 “당신은 아시아인인데 중국어를 할 수 있죠?”라고 말하며 번역자로서의 역할을 요구했다고 주장했다. 그가 자신이 한국과 일본 혈통이라고 대답하자 직원은 짜증을 내며 “어떻게 중국어를 못하냐?”고 말했다고 한다.
해당 감독은 직원들이 공격적인 어조로 계속해서 괴롭혔고, 경찰을 호출하며 탑승을 거부했다고 주장했다. 이 사건은 플로리다 연방 법원에 소송이 제기되었으며, 항공사에 대한 차별, 정서적 고통 및 계약 위반을 고소하고 있다.
