Yoon says issue of separated families is 'most pressing task'

President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of families separated by the Korean War, stating that it is the most pressing task. Speaking through Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho at a ceremony marking the second Separated Families Day, Yoon highlighted the plight of the approximately 3,000 applicants for reunions who pass away each year without being able to reunite with their loved ones in North Korea. Despite challenges, Yoon expressed determination to find ways to address the issue, including conducting surveys of separated family members across different regions and seeking international attention and cooperation, including at the United Nations. In an effort to raise awareness and commemorate separated families, South Korea designated a specific day on the lunar calendar, two days before the Chuseok fall harvest holiday, as a day to honor separated families. This year's Chuseok falls on Tuesday, coinciding with the ongoing efforts to address this important issue. President Yoon's commitment to finding solutions and seeking international cooperation underscores the significance of addressing the challenges faced by separated families.
