Outgoing Japanese PM to visit Seoul on Friday

President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida are scheduled to hold discussions during Kishida's two-day visit to South Korea, marking their final one-on-one meeting before Kishida's planned departure from office. The talks, as announced by Yoon's office, will focus on past achievements in bilateral cooperation and strategies to enhance the relationship between the two East Asian countries at bilateral, regional, and international levels. The specific date of the meeting was not disclosed, but the presidential office is coordinating the agenda for the talks. Kishida's visits to allied countries like South Korea before his resignation are seen as a way to showcase his diplomatic accomplishments and emphasize Japan's commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties even after a leadership transition. However, given the time constraints for Kishida, the upcoming summit is not expected to produce significant new developments. The relationship between Yoon and Kishida has evolved over multiple meetings, with efforts to address historical and territorial disputes, but the issue of historical disputes remains unresolved, leading to debates over the approach taken by Yoon in his diplomacy with Japan.
