According to government data cited by lawmaker Rep. Seo Mi-hwa, only around 12 percent of imported food items deemed unsafe have been removed from the market. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety's data indicates that, on average, 12.5 percent of the 141 import food items that were ordered to be recalled since 2022 have actually been taken off the local market. Rep. Seo highlighted that while some recalled food items had a collection rate of over 80 percent, more than 90 recalled items had rates below 10 percent. For example, prohibited dried mushrooms from China and Vietnamese chili pepper with excessive pesticide residues had very low collection rates despite recall orders. A ministry official explained that the government aims to swiftly retrieve affected products from the market when a recall order is issued and inform consumers to return the products to the place of purchase. However, difficulties arise in retrieving products that have already been sold and consumed or disposed of by consumers. Seo emphasized the importance of the food safety agency conducting tests more quickly to take necessary steps before large quantities of unfit food are distributed.
