<p>Universities expanding artificial intelligence (AI) programs are being urged to anchor their efforts in ethics and human-centered values. The Catholic University of Korea emphasizes that its competitive edge lies not only in AI innovation but also in its Catholic identity and a guiding emphasis on human dignity, ethics and respect for life.</p>
<p>President Choi Jun-gui outlined a vision of “Be Catholic, Be Excellent,” aiming to blend advanced AI and biomedical advances with education grounded in moral principles. He stressed that AI is a tool that should be guided and controlled by humans.</p>
<p>The university is implementing its philosophy through AI-focused medical and biotechnology initiatives, including an interdisciplinary graduate program in AI drug discovery and regulatory science set to launch this fall, jointly run by the colleges of pharmacy, medicine and medical AI. The program will use clinical data from affiliated hospitals and include industry internships and regulatory training.</p>
<p>The institution has also advanced its ethical framework, with the Catholic Medical Center adopting Korea’s first AI Code of Ethics to ensure AI serves humanity rather than supplant human judgment. Choi noted the growing importance of ethical review and regulatory oversight as AI accelerates drug development and other medical fields.</p>
<p>Central to the university’s strategy is an integrated ecosystem linking education, research and clinical care, which Choi says differentiates it from institutions that must assemble these components separately. The university plans to expand industry collaboration, including a Bio-AI Cosmetics Track with COSMAX to align education, joint research and scholarships with real-world applications.</p>
<p>Beyond national activities, the university is leveraging its global Catholic network to boost international competitiveness, including a Vatican-approved Graduate School of Canon Law and connections with AVEPRO and SACRU. These ties are expected to facilitate joint research, faculty exchanges and international collaboration beyond traditional student exchanges.</p>
<p>The university is preparing to host an international academic conference during the 2027 World Youth Day in Seoul and aims to play a prominent role in the event, which organizers anticipate will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. The goal is to demonstrate the university’s ethos of combining Catholic identity with scholarly excellence on the world stage.</p>
<p>International expansion includes partnerships with Catholic universities in several countries to pursue research on sustainability, ecological restoration and the protection of human life, supported by joint funding. The broader objective is to enhance research competitiveness with an aim to rank among the top 200 universities globally, while prioritizing authenticity in its Catholic mission over chasing rankings alone.</p>

“AI는 도구에 불과하다. 인간이 항상 그 도구를 인도하고 통제하는 주체여야 한다”고 최근 Korea Times와의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.
한국의 첫 번째 의료 AI 윤리 강령: 대학은 의학과 생명공학 중심의 일련의 AI 이니셔티브를 통해 이 철학을 실천하고 있다.
이번 학기부터 약학대학, 의과대학, 의생의료 AI대학이 공동 운영하는 AI 신약 개발 및 규제 과학 분야의 학제 간 석사과정을 개설한다.
최 총장은 이 이니셔티브가 AI 기술과 이를 규제하고 윤리적으로 다루는 프레임워크를 이해하는 전문 인력에 대한 글로벌 수요에 대응한다고 밝혔다.
학생들은 가톨릭의료원의 8개 연계 병원의 임상 데이터를 활용해 훈련하고, 산업계 인턴십과 규제 교육에 참여한다.
의료 윤리 강령의 제정: 가톨릭의료센터는 5월 7일 한국 내 의료기관으로서는 처음으로 AI 윤리 강령을 채택했으며, AI가 인간의 판단을 대체하기보다 인간을 돕도록 해야 한다고 선언했다.
최 총장은 AI가 의약품 개발의 설계에서 검증까지 모든 단계를 비약적으로 가속하고 있지만, 기술의 발전이 빨라질수록 윤리적 검토와 규제 감독의 중요성이 커진다고 지적했다.
그는 교육, 연구, 임상 care를 하나의 생태계로 연결하는 대학의 네트워크가 목표 달성에 중요한 이점이라고 강조했다.
“우리의 강점은 대학, 산업계, 병원이 이미 단일 생태계 안에서 운영되고 있다는 점이다. 다른 대학들이 따로 구축해야 할 것을 이미 갖추고 있다”고 말했다.
그 생태계를 통해 대학은 최첨단 기술 전문성과 윤리적 판단을 함께 갖춘 전문가를 양성하는 것을 목표로 한다.
또한 대학은 연구와 상업화를 연결하기 위한 산업과의 협력도 강화하고 있다.
최근 COSMAX와의 파트너십을 통해 생명-AI 뷰티케어 분야 트랙을 마련해 교육, 공동 연구, 산업 후원 장학금을 하나로 묶고, 학생들이 기업 연구자들과 함께 AI의 실제 응용을 다루도록 하여 연구를 실질적 혁신으로 전환하는 것을 중시한다.
글로벌 네트워크를 경쟁력 자산으로 활용: 전통적 교환 파트너십에 의존하기보다 글로벌 가톨릭 네트워크를 활용해 국제 경쟁력을 강화하려 한다.
전략의 초석은 동아시아 지역에서 가톨릭 승인 받은 교계법학대학원으로, 가톨릭 고등교육에 특화된 학술 및 제도 네트워크에의 접근을 가능하게 한다. 최 총장은 이러한 네트워크가 공동 연구, 교수 교환, 국제 협력의 기회를 제공한다고 밝혔다.
네트워크에는 AVEPRO(교구 대학의 품질 보증 기관)와 SACRU(주요 가톨릭 연구 대학 연합)가 포함된다.
최 총장은 이러한 인연이 연구 협력, 교수 교환, 거버넌스 협력, 전통적 대학 파트너십을 넘어서는 학술 외교 형태의 국제적 교류 창구를 열어 준다고 말했다.
가톨릭대학교는 2027년 서울 세계 청년 축제에서 중심적인 역할을 맡을 준비를 하고 있다. 이 행사는 아시아에서 두 번째로 열리는 사례로, 약 40만 명의 해외 참가자와 대략 100만 명의 총 방문객이 예상된다.
바티칸의 요청으로 대학은 국제 학술대회를 주최해 전 세계의 청년, 학자, 교회 지도자들을 하나로 모을 예정이며, 이는 단순한 종교 모임 그 이상이라고 최 총장은 설명했다.
“세계에 ‘Be Catholic, Be Excellent’이 무엇을 진정으로 의미하는지 보여줄 수 있는 플랫폼이다.”라고 최 총장은 말했다.
최 총장은 대학의 글로벌 비전이 여전히 확고하다고 강조했다.
그는 글로벌 순위가 중요한 벤치마크이지만 대학의 최종 목표는 아니라고 했다. 다른 기관을 모방해 명예를 쫓기보다는 고유한 강점에 기반해 경쟁력을 키워야 한다고 주장했다.
“대학들이 위기에 직면했을 때 많은 이들이 타 기관의 벤치마크로 살아남으려 한다. 그러나 해답은 다르다고 본다. 우리가 더 가톨릭적일수록 더 경쟁력이 생긴다”고 말했다.
AI 시대에 대학은 기술적 진보나 지식의 확장을 넘어서는 것을 추구해야 한다고 덧붙였다.
“생명, 진리, 인간 존엄을 올바르게 추구한다면 — 인식과 순위는 그 결과로 따라올 것이다. 그것이 목적이 아니다.”
