<p>The chiefs of the Korean and U.S. Marine Corps discussed expanding military cooperation and joint drills to strengthen their combined defense readiness posture, officials said Thursday.</p>
<p>Lt. Gen. Ju Il-suk met with his U.S. counterpart, Gen. Eric M. Smith, at the Pentagon near Washington on Tuesday, according to Korea's Marine Corps.</p>
<p>The two sides agreed that the allies' Marines will work to bolster a combined defense posture even after the United States transfers wartime operational control to Seoul.</p>
<p>Smith emphasized the Marine Corps' role in maintaining a strong and lasting alliance and expressed a desire to sustain joint drills and personnel exchanges to contribute to security on the Korean Peninsula.</p>
<p>Ju also visited a Korean War veterans memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Korean War memorial honoring the Changjin Reservoir Battle to pay respects to U.S. soldiers who fought in the 1950-53 Korean War.</p>
<p>The visit, scheduled for June 1-7, was conducted at the invitation of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command.</p>

양측은 미국이 전시 작전통제권(OPCON)을 서울로 이양한 이후에도 연합 해병대가 공동 방위 태세를 강화하기 위해 노력할 것이라는 이해를 공유했다.
스미스 대장은 강하고 지속 가능한 동맹 형성에서 해병대의 역할을 강조하고, 한국 측의 안보에 기여하기 위해 양측의 합동 훈련 및 인원 교류를 계속해 나가기를 바랐다.
한편 주사장은 전쟁 기념관인 Arlington 국립묘지와 창진포 전투를 기념하는 한국 전쟁 기념관 방문을 통해 1950-53년 한국 전쟁에서 싸운 미군에 경의를 표했다.
이번 방문은 6월 1일부터 7일까지 예정되었으며, 미국 해병대 전력사령부의 초청으로 이뤄졌다.
