<p>South Korea will advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup with a draw against South Africa in their final group match, but head coach Hong Myung-bo says the team must not settle for anything less than a win. </p>
<p>Speaking at a prematch press conference in Guadalupe, Mexico, Hong emphasized that a draw would be risky and that the opponents are difficult to beat, asserting the team will approach the match with the mindset of securing a victory.</p>
<p>South Korea currently sit second in Group A with three points after beating Czechia 2-1 and losing to Mexico 1-0. Mexico has already secured the group winner, while South Korea can secure second place with a win or a draw, and could still advance as one of the best third-place teams depending on Czechia’s result against Mexico.</p>
<p>Conversely, a South Korea loss coupled with a Czechia win would eliminate them from the tournament. Hong reflected on past World Cup experiences where a final-group-match win was necessary and cautioned against relying on a draw.</p>
<p>The head coach noted a defensive lapse against Mexico but said the team has regrouped and shown positives in the opening matches. He indicated changes to the lineup for the South Africa game and expressed enthusiasm about playing in front of a supportive crowd at Estadio Monterrey, mentioning the local Korean community and appreciative Mexican fans.</p>
<p>Hong also said the hot and humid conditions in Guadalupe would not pose significant issues, given the team’s experience playing in similar climates. He indicated that adjustments would be made in two or three positions for the upcoming match.</p>

"무승부가 충분하다고 생각하는 순간 우리가 문제에 봉착하게 될 것"이라고 홍 감독은 멕시코 동북부 멕시코 몬테레이 스타디움에서 열린 남한의 그룹 A 대 남아프리카 공화국전 전날 프레스콘퍼런스에서 말했다. 킥오프는 현지 시간 수요일 오후 7시, 한국 시간으로는 목요일 오전 10시다.
"상대 팀은 다루기가 어려울 것"이라며 홍 감독은 말했다. "우리는 무엇보다 이 경기를 이길 마음가짐으로 준비할 것이다."
남한은 그룹 A에서 승점 3점으로 2위를 차지하고 있으며 체코와의 2-1 승리, 멕시코에 의한 1-0 패배를 기록했다. 멕시코는 남한과의 승리로 그룹 1위를 확정지으며 이미 32강에 진출했다.
남한은 남아프리카 공화국과의 승리나 무승부로 2위를 확정지하며, 체코가 멕시코를 이기지 않는다면 8개 최상위 3위 팀 중 하나로 토너먼트 진출의 가능성을 얻을 수 있다.
다만 남한이 패하고 체코가 승리하는 경우 토너먼트에서 탈락하게 된다.
"과거 월드컵을 되돌아보면, 조별리그 마지막 경기에서 이겨야만 진출할 수 있었던 상황이 있었다"며 홍 감독은 말했다. "이 위치가 나쁘지는 않지만, 무승부가 괜찮다고 생각하는 순간 문제가 생길 수 있다."
멕시코와의 경기에서 남한은 거의 상대에 앞섰으나, 후반 초반 골키퍼 김승규가 수비수 이기혁의 실수로 볼을 빼앗기며 골문이 흔들려 실점했다. 홍 감독은 선수들이 멕시코전 이후에 "조금은 자신을 낮추었다"고 인정했지만, 이후 재정비했다고 말했다.
"앞선 두 경기에서 선수들의 좋은 모습을 충분히 봤다"며 홍 감독은 말했다. "우리는 이 경기가 우리에게 결정적임을 알고 있으니 자신감을 가지고 서로를 신뢰하며 경기에 임하라고 했다."
멕시코전과 비교해 홍 감독은 멕시코전과 달리 남아프리카 공화국전에 대해 선발 라인업을 한두 자리에서 바꿀 것이라고 밝혔다.
또한 몬테레이 스타디움의 팬들 앞에서 뛰는 것을 기대한다고 말했다.
"그 지역에 많은 한인 거주자들이 있어 우리에게 홈경기처럼 느껴질 것"이라며 홍 감독은 말했다. "우리에겐 큰 선물이 될 것이다. 현지 멕시코 팬들의 응원도 받고 있다는 것을 알고 있고 아주 감사하다."
꾸준히 더운 가옌 조건이 남한에 큰 문제를 일으키지 않을 것이라고도 밝혔다. 이미 괴타라다 근처의 더 서늘한 환경에서 두 차례의 경기를 치렀기 때문이다.
"우리에겐 이러한 환경이 그다지 어렵지 않다,"고 말했다. "우리 선수들은 한국에서 무더위와 습한 조건에서의 경기에도 익숙하다."
