Reuters-Yonhap</p></div></div><p class="editor-p"><span>Na Hong-jin, the director behind the sci-fi thriller "Hope," said the sense of looming danger he felt about the world inspired him to make the film that has been invited to compete at this year's Cannes Film Festival.</span></p><p class="editor-p">"Hope" portrays the sudden appearance of mysterious entities in a small coastal town near the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, with its star-studded cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung as well as Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.</p><p class="editor-p">"Around the world, I felt there were a lot of ominous things in this planet where mankind lives," Na said in an interview held Monday on the sidelines of the film festival, which is under way through May 23.</p><p class="editor-p">"It felt like that a war was about to happen, or that tremendous violence would mercilessly blanket the whole world," he said, noting that the film portrays how violence emerges and grows bigger.</p><p class="editor-p">Na said he is extremely happy and feels honored about "Hope" making it to the competition section of the prestigious film festival.</p><p class="editor-p">"I feel really good and joyous about the fact it made it on the list. I didn't realize I would feel this good and honored," he said.</p><p class="editor-p">"Hope" will vie for the top honor at this year's Cannes, alongside 21 other titles invited to the competition section.</p><p class="editor-p">It is the first Korean film in four years to compete for the Palme d'Or since renowned director Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave" and "Broker" by award-winning Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda, a film produced by Korean companies and starring Korean actors, were both invited to compete in 2022.</p><p class="editor-p">For Na, "Hope" is his fourth feature work that has been invited to Cannes. His feature debut, "The Chaser," was screened in the Midnight Screenings section in 2008, followed by "The Yellow Sea" in Un Certain Regard in 2011. <br><hr><br><p>해마다 열리는 칸 영화제 경쟁 부문에 초청된 영화 ‘Hope’의 감독 나홍진은 세상에 대한 임박한 위기의 감각이 그를 영화로 이끌었다고 말했다.</p>
<p>‘Hope’는 요새화된 비무장지대(DMZ) 인근의 작은 해안 마을에 불현듯 나타나는 신비한 존재들을 그려내며, 황정민, 조인성, 할리우드 배우 마이클 패스벤더와 엘리자 벅칸더가 출연한다.</p>
<p>나 감독은 영화제 기간 행사를 앞두고 가진 인터뷰에서 “전 세계적으로 이 지구상에서 인간이 살고 있는 곳에 불길한 것들이 많았다고 느꼈다”고 말했다. 그는 전쟁이 임박한 듯하거나 거대한 폭력이 세상을 가혹하게 뒤덮을 것 같다고 느꼈다고 덧붙이며, 폭력이 어떻게 나타나 커져 가는지를 영화가 보여준다고 설명했다.</p>
<p>나 감독은 이 작품이 이 prestigious 영화제의 경쟁 부문에 오르게 된 것에 대해 매우 기쁘고 영광스럽게 생각한다고 밝혔다.</p>
<p>그는 “목록에 올랐다는 사실만으로도 정말 좋고 기쁘다고 느낀다. 이렇게 기쁘고 영광스럽다고 느낄 줄은 몰랐다”고 말했다.</p>
<p>‘Hope’는 올해 칸에서 경쟁 부문 상을 놓고 21편의 다른 초청작과 함께 경쟁하게 된다.</p>
<p>한국 영화가 팔마 도르 상(황금종려상) 경쟁에 four년 만에 다시 진입하는 것은 유명 감독 박찬욱의 ‘헤럴레이션’이 2022년 경쟁에 초청된 이후로 처음이다. 일본의 권위 있는 감독 이와요코 아라이의 ‘브로커’ 역시 2022년 경쟁 부문에 초청되었다.</p>
<p>나 감독에게 있어 ‘Hope’는 칸에 초청된 네 번째 장편 작품이다. 그의 데뷔작 ‘추격자’는 2008년 미드나잇 스크리닝 부문에 상영되었고, 2011년에는 ‘황해’가 칸의 비정규 경쟁인 칸 비정규 부문에 초청되었으며, ‘곡성’은 2016년 칸 영화제 비경쟁 부문에 초대된 바 있다.</p>
