Opposition leader Jang Dong-hyeok said Monday he has established a "hotline" with key members of the Republican Party during his visit to the United States, rejecting criticism that the trip was fruitless or poorly timed.
Jang, the PPP leader, spoke at a press conference after a 10-day visit to the United States.
The trip drew criticism for taking place less than two months before local elections on June 3 and for a viral photo showing Jang and PPP Supreme Council member Kim Min-soo posing in front of the Capitol in Washington.
He said he met and listened to opinions from many in the U.S. government, Congress, and the American establishment, and he conveyed the PPP's position, without naming individuals.
He said he established an actual hotline with key members of the U.S. Republican Party and built a foundation of trust to support the Korea-U.S. alliance.
He said the visit was for the local elections, and that the opposition should be judged by voters for its efforts to repair ties with the United States, as relations have faced ongoing issues under the current administration.
Looking ahead, he stated that if the PPP's role is needed, he will personally communicate with the United States and lead any resolution.
Regarding the viral photo, he said it was taken briefly after completing their itinerary at Congress and before their next engagement, and that it should not overshadow the trip's achievements.

장동혁 의원은 월요일 미국 방문 중 주요 공화당 관계자들과의 '핫라인'을 구축했다고 밝히며, 당 안팎의 비판이 헛되거나 시기가 좋지하다는 지적을 거부했다.
주요 야당인 국민의힘의 장동혁은 미국 방문 10일간의 일정을 마친 직후 열린 기자회견에서 이 발언을 했다.
이번 방문은 6월 3일 지방선거를 불과 두 달도 채 남겨두지 않은 시점에 이루어져 광범위한 비판을 받았고, 워싱턴 의사당 앞에서 장과 당 최고위원 김민수로 보이는 이들이 포즈를 취한 채 촬영된 사진이 바이럴로 확산됐다.
장 의원은 국회에서 열린 기자회견에서 "미국 정부와 의회, 미국 진영의 다수 인사를 만나 의견을 듣고 우리 입장을 충분히 전달했다"고 말했으며, 이들 인사의 신원을 밝히지 않았다.
"미국 공화당의 핵심 인사들과 실제 핫라인을 구축했고, 불안정한 한미 동맹을 지탱하기 위한 신뢰의 기반을 다졌다"고 덧붙였다.
장 의원은 이번 미국 방문이 지방선거를 위한 것이며, 이재명 정권이 관계를 지속적으로 문제를 일으키는 가운데 야당은 미국과의 관계를 회복하려는 노력이 유권자들에 의해 평가되어야 한다고 봤다고 밝혔다.
"앞으로도 국민의힘의 역할이 필요해지는 상황이 발생한다면, 제가 직접 미국과 소통하며 문제 해결을 이끌겠다"고 말했다.
바이럴 사진에 대해 장 의원은 이 사진은 의회 일정을 마친 직후와 다음 일정이 시작되기 전 짧은 시간에 촬영됐다고 설명했다.
"공식적으로 공개되지 않은 한 장의 사진이 미국 방문의 모든 성과를 가리길 바라지 않는다"고 말했다.
