Seoul will again host an international education conference this May as KOTESOL prepares to hold its 33rd International Conference at Sookmyung Women’s University on May 16-17, bringing together educators, researchers and language professionals from around the world.
Founded in 1993, KOTESOL has grown into a leading professional organization for English language teaching in Korea. Its mission is to support the professional development of English teachers and improve English language education across the country, with the annual conference serving as a key event in the global ELT calendar.
This year’s conference is expected to continue the tradition of diversity and collaboration, with proposals accepted from around 30 countries, building on last year’s participation from 35 countries.
The conference emphasizes accessibility and global inclusion, including discounted registration for educators from low- and middle-income countries, prerecorded online session options, and a presenter travel grant to support educators from underrepresented countries who might otherwise face barriers to attending in person.
The program is designed to balance theory and practice, featuring workshops, research presentations and panel discussions intended to provide practical teaching strategies, highlight current research and foster discussions about the future of English language education.
Networking remains a key strength, offering opportunities for educators from diverse institutions, countries and teaching contexts to connect, share experiences and form professional partnerships that may extend beyond the event.
Beyond formal sessions, the conference includes a Saturday evening social event and aims to engage with the local community, including a taekwondo performance and a Marketplace area with booths and handmade crafts to support local vendors.
Early registration runs through May 5, with discounted rates for members and benefits such as guaranteed lunches for both days, a printed schedule, and a fast-entry pass; on-site registration remains available with more limited access on the final day.
Membership offers additional benefits, including access to regular chapter meetings, discounted event entry, publications, opportunities to present at conferences, publish research and apply for grants, as well as participation in special interest groups focused on areas like multimedia learning and social justice.
The organization notes its diverse membership, including teachers from private academies, public schools, universities and training centers, along with researchers and administrators, with about a quarter of members being Korean and the remainder from a range of nationalities, reflecting a multicultural professional community.
The 2026 conference theme, “Criticality, Innovation, and Compassion,” signals a forward-looking approach that combines academic rigor with human-centered teaching practices in an era of rapid technological change and cultural exchange.
The event is positioned as a source of professional inspiration and renewal for attendees, offering exposure to new teaching methods, current research and opportunities to collaborate with like-minded educators.

올해 5월 서울은 다시 국제 교육 교류의 중심지로 부상할 예정이며, 한국 영어 교사 협회(KOTESOL)가 33번째 국제회의를 주최하기 위해 준비하고 있다. 행사 일정은 5월 16일부터 17일까지 숙명여자대학교에서 열리며, 매년 열리는 이 행사는 전 세계의 교육자, 연구자, 언어 전문가를 한자리에 모은다.
1993년에 설립된 KOTESOL은 영어교육(ELT) 분야의 한국 주요 전문 단체 중 하나로 성장했다. 이 단체의 사명은 영어 교사의 전문성 개발을 지원하고 전국의 영어교육을 개선하는 것이다. 다년간 이 협회의 연례 국제회의는 글로벌 ELT 달력의 핵심 행사가 되었고, 다양한 배경과 국적의 참가자를 끌어모아 왔다.

영어교육 분야가 계속 진화하는 가운데 KOTESOL 국제회의와 같은 행사들은 방향성을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 2026년의 주제인 “비판성, 혁신, 공감”은 학문적 엄격성과 인간 중심의 교수 실천을 조화시키려는 미래 지향적 접근을 시사한다. 빠르게 변화하는 기술과 증가하는 문화 교류의 시대에서 이러한 주제는 적응하고 성장하려는 교육자들에게 큰 공감을 얻는다.
