A major tech company has expanded an emergency location-sharing feature on iPhones for South Korean users at the request of the government, officials said on Wednesday.
The service duration was extended from five minutes to 30 minutes to help emergency responders more accurately identify the locations of users in need of assistance, following a request from the Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC).
The expansion came after meetings involving the KMCC, the company, the National Police Agency, the National Fire Agency, and the Korea Internet & Security Agency.
A KMCC official noted that smartphones from another major manufacturer do not have the same limitations due to a different operating mechanism, and said the extension was implemented specifically for South Korean users.
KMCC Chair Kim Jong-cheol welcomed the decision and said the agency would continue collaborating with global companies and related organizations to improve the quality of location-sharing services to enhance public safety.
