Korean golfer Kim Sei-young carried an eight-stroke lead with five holes to play at El Caballero Country Club, but needed an up-and-down from off the back of the 18th green to secure a two-shot advantage heading into the final round of the LA Championship.
“Oh, wow, it feels like roller-coaster,” the 33-year-old said after the third round.
Her late meltdown with four straight bogeys opened the door for challengers, including two-time event winner Hannah Green, to contend on Sunday as the field pursues the season’s first women’s major.
Kim finished with a 1-under 71 to reach 15-under 201. Green shot 67 to join Suvichaya Vinijchaitham (67), Jessica Porvasnik (68) and Ina Yoon (71) at 13-under. Former UCLA star Patty Tavatanakit was one stroke back after a 67.
Amateur Asterisk Talley was tied for 23rd at 7-under following a 69, continuing her first event since losing the lead late in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
Kim opened with a birdie on the par-5 first and proceeded to birdie every odd-numbered hole on the front nine, including a 20-foot birdie at the ninth to stretch the lead to seven. She built the edge to eight before bogeys on Nos. 14–17.
“Every hole is downwind starting 15 until the 18,” Kim said, adding she was “struggling with the downwind today” after going at a difficult pin on 16 and finding the water.
Kim previously won the BMW Ladies Championship in Korea, adding to her 13 LPGA Tour titles. Green, who has three worldwide wins this year, noted the wind and course conditions could shift and pose challenges for Sunday, with holes possibly playing easier at times and the ball traveling farther off the tee.
The tournament is being played at El Caballero for the second straight year due to renovations at Wilshire Country Club, and the next major is slated for Houston next week as the season’s first major of the year unfolds.
During the round, the purse was increased by $1 million to $4.75 million, with the winner set to receive $712,500—the largest prize on the LPGA Tour outside the majors and the season-ending event.
