Korean Air will enter emergency management mode this week to address rising fuel costs and other worsening external conditions, according to industry sources on Tuesday.
An internal notice from Vice Chairman Woo Kee-hong indicates the emergency management system will be implemented starting Wednesday as part of phased measures to improve cost efficiency.
The move aims to cope with higher costs driven by surging fuel prices amid ongoing Middle East conflict, with warnings that prolonged high oil prices could disrupt the company’s ability to meet business targets.
The measures are described as part of broader structural efforts to strengthen the company’s fundamentals rather than a temporary cost-cutting exercise.
Asiana Airlines, a subsidiary and the country’s second-largest carrier, also entered emergency management mode last week.
Overall, the airline industry is under pressure as jet fuel costs rise and the won weakens against the U.S. dollar, with several low-cost carriers planning flight reductions to mitigate losses. Industry watchers anticipate further consolidation if the Middle East conflict persists.
