In Tokyo, Korea’s World Baseball Classic manager Ryu Ji-hyun outlined a focus on team pride and staying behind the spotlight as the tournament approaches. He emphasized creating an atmosphere where players feel proud to represent what he terms the greatest national team ever, and he said he will let coaches convey messages to the players when needed.
Korea is set to open Pool C play against Czechia at Tokyo Dome at 7 p.m. local time. The team has conducted an extensive buildup, including camps in Saipan, Okinawa, and two exhibition games in Osaka before arriving in Tokyo.
Ryu said he has maintained the same lineup that defeated the Orix Buffaloes 8-5 in Korea’s final exhibition game, with Kim Do-yeong leading off, followed by Jahmai Jones and Lee Jung-hoo, and Ahn Hyun-min batting cleanup. Moon Bo-gyeong, Shay Whitcomb, Kim Hye-seong, Park Dong-won, and Kim Ju-won will follow in the order.
Captain Lee, entering his third season with the San Francisco Giants, is viewed as Korea’s top contact hitter who can provide gap power. Ryu indicated Czechia will be mindful of Lee, and he wants to surround him with right-handed power hitters in Jones and Ahn to create balance against left-handed pitching.
Right-handed pitchers So Hyeong-jun and Jeong Woo-joo will start for Korea, with bullpen usage to be adjusted based on score and game situation. Both pitchers are expected to throw no more than 50 pitches.
During the first round of the WBC, any pitcher throwing more than 50 pitches must rest for four days, a constraint that could impact Korea’s plans given injuries to key pitchers and the need to advance from the group stage.
Ryu stressed the importance of the first game and noted that the team has run simulations to prepare for various scenarios as they aim to advance out of the first round for the first time since 2009.
월드 베이스볼 클래식(WBC) 개막이 임박한 가운데, 한국 대표팀 감독 류지현은 목요일 선수들이 자신의 능력에 자부심을 가졌으면 한다고 말했다.
한국은 목요일 도쿄돔에서 체코와의 C조 예선전을 오후 7시에 시작한다. 국가대표팀은 오랜 준비를 거쳤다. 류 감독은 1월 사이판에서 예비 캠프를 시작한 뒤, 남서부 일본 오키나와로 최종 선수단을 이끌고 또 다른 캠프를 소집했다. 이어 한국은 오사카에서 두 차례 시범경기를 치렀고 화요일 도쿄에 도착했다.
류 감독은 “오랜 시간을 함께 보냈고, 선수들이 역대 최고의 국가대표팀의 일원이라는 자부심을 느낄 수 있도록 분위기를 만들려 했다”면서 “그리고 이 시점까지 꾸준히 준비가 되어왔다”고 말했다.
류 감독은 이번에 자신은 배경에 남아 코치들이 선수들에게 전달해야 할 메시지를 전달하도록 두 번째로 두고 싶다고 말했다.
“앞으로도 선수들을 믿어야 한다는 것만큼은 확고하게 유지해야 한다”고 부연했다.
이를 위해 류 감독은 화요일 한국의 마지막 시범경기에서 오릭스 버팔로스에 8-5로 이긴 동일 라인업을 고수하고 있다.
그 경기에서 홈런을 친 김도영이 선두타자로 나오고 이어 자마이 존스, 이정후가 차례로 타석에 선다. 버팔로스를 상대로 솔로포를 날린 안현민이 4번 타자이다.
문보경, 셰이 윗콤, 김혜성, 박동원, 김주원 순으로 뒤를 이을 예정이다.
이강(이)로를 회장으로 삼고 팀의 중심 타자로 불리며 좌우 모드의 파워도 갖춘 리 리(리 선수) 역시 체코가 리를 신중히 주시할 것이라고 류 감독은 밝혔다. 이에 오른손 파워히터인 존스와 안현민으로 주변을 둘러싼다고 설명했다.
“이 구성이 우리에게 더 균형감을 준다고 느꼈다”라며 “시범경기에서 좋은 결과를 냈고 이제 좌완 투수에 직면하게 될 때 좌타와 우타를 섞는 것이 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
오른손 투수로 소 형준과 정우주가 한국의 첫 두 선발로 나설 예정이며, 이후 불펜 로테이션은 점수와 경기 상황에 따라 달라진다. 류 감독은 소현종과 정우주 모두 50구를 넘지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다.
WBC의 1라운드에서 50구를 넘긴 투수는 4일간 경기에 나설 수 없기 때문에 이번 대회에서 이 제한을 넘기는 상황은 피해야 한다고 전했다. 한국은 최종 경기를 월요일에 치르는 만큼 이미 부상으로 주요 투수 일부가 빠진 상태에서 이 규정을 넘길 경우 남은 대회에 참여하지 못하는 비율이 커진다.
한국은 2009년 이후 1라운드를 통과해 본 적이 없는데, 앞으로의 3개 대회에서도 첫 경기에서 패한 뒤 벼랑 끝에서 벗어나지 못했다는 점이 남아 있다.
류 감독은 “첫 경기의 중요성을 모두가 이해하고 있다. 여러 시나리오를 시뮬레이션했고 그 틀 안에서 운영하며 발생 가능한 변수에 대비해 준비하겠다”고 말했다.
