Entering his 20th professional season, Kia Tigers pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong has experienced both the highest achievements and the lowest moments in his career, including three Korean Series championships and MVP awards, as well as periods when his team finished last and failed to reach the postseason.
In 2025, the Tigers finished eighth out of ten despite winning the 2024 Korean Series title, and they traded two All-Stars, shortstop Park Chan-ho and designated hitter Choi Hyoung-woo, in free agency. By many measures, they are viewed as weaker than the previous season.
Yang, 38, is determined to prove the skeptics wrong and expressed pride in his team despite lower expectations.
“I really don't understand it,” Yang said during a media scrum after the season-opening media day in Seoul. “We’ve lost two good players, but it hurts my pride to see us regarded as a weak team just because those two have left. I don't know what the basis of such thinking is, and I think we should all try to show something different on the field this year rather than just talk tough.”
He cited last season as an example, noting the Tigers were widely expected to repeat as champions but started slow due to injuries and never recovered.
Yang emphasized that there are no personal goals driving him this season; his focus is on helping the team win, even if that means his traditional career milestones may not be reached at their usual pace.
He remains the KBO’s all-time leader in strikeouts (2,185) and is second in innings pitched (2,656 2/3), trailing Song Jin-woo in both wins and career innings. He underscored that his priority is contributing to the team’s success and utilizing talented players effectively rather than pursuing personal statistics.
Yang also dispelled the notion that he is forcing his way into the starting rotation to pad his statistics, stating his aim has consistently been to pitch long innings to relieve the bullpen and focus on the team’s needs.
As he enters the late stage of his career, Yang acknowledged changes in his body and mechanics, indicating he may now pitch shorter, higher-quality stints—three or four innings—to maximize effectiveness and support the team.
20년째 프로야구 무대를 누비고 있는 기아 타이거즈의 선발 투수 양현종은 그동안 최고의 순간과 최저의 시기를 모두 겪어 왔다. 그는 한국시리즈 우승 3회와 정규시즌 MVP 및 한국시리즈 MVP를 모두 수상한 바 있다. 그러나 양현종이 속한 팀은 그동안 KBO에서 꼴찌로 추락하거나 포스트시즌 진출에 실패하는 일도 많았다. 올해는 다소 비관적 전망이 제시되고 있다. 지난해 2024년 한국시리즈 우승을 차지했지만, 2025년에는 10개 팀 중 8위에 그치며 부진을 면치 못했다. 여름 이적 시장에서도 단축타자 박찬호와 출전지 소속으로 뛰던 최영우를 잃으며 다수의 전문가들은 팀을 더 약화된 상태로 본다. 38세의 양현종은 회의론을 불식시키고 싶어 한다. “팀에 대한 기대가 낮은 이유를 잘 모르겠다. 최영우와 찬호 두 선수를 잃었지만, 그저 약해졌다고 보는 것 자체가 제 자존심에 상처를 준다. 어떤 근거로 그런 생각을 하는지 모르겠다. 올해는 단지 말을 세게 하는 것보다 실제로 다르게 보여 주는 한 해가 되어야 한다고 본다.” 라고 서울에서 열린 연례 미디어 데객 후 열린 기자간담회에서 말했다. 양현종은 지난해 팀의 사례를 들어 이 같은 점을 설명했다. 다수의 전문가들이 한국시리즈 방어를 점치던 가운데 부상으로 주춤한 시작을 했고, 끝내 회복에 실패했다. “우리가 현재 나쁜 팀으로 여겨진다고 해서, 시즌 말까지 그렇게 끝난다는 보장은 없다. pundits의 예측은 대체로 오판이다.”라고 덧붙였다. 은퇴를 눈앞에 두고 있는 양현종은 팀의 이익을 위해 개인 목표를 모두 제쳐 두었다고 말했다. 이는 통상적으로 얻는 승수나 이닝 수, 삼진 수의 증가가 아예 없을 수도 있음을 시사한다. 그는 이미 KBO 사상 최다 삼진 2,185을 기록 중이다. 이닝은 2,656⅔로 2위에 해당하지만, 3,003이 여전히 남아 있는 송진우의 기록이 눈앞에 있다. 승수에서도 양현종은 210대 186으로 차이가 있다. “공 속도나 이닝 목표에 대한 의도는 전혀 없다. 지난해 이후로 우선순위가 바뀌었다.”라고 말하며, “팀 승리에 기여하고 좋은 선수를 끊임없이 활용해 팀이 이길 수 있도록 돕는 것이 최우선이다.”라고 밝혔다. 양현종은 자신이 시즌을 유지하기 위해 의도적으로 선발 로테이션에 집착해 왔다는 의혹을 일축했다. “그런 적은 없다. 항상 불펜의 부담을 덜어주기 위해 길게 이닝을 소화하려고 한 것뿐이다. 항상 팀 차원에서의 이야기였다.” 은퇴에 가까워진 현재의 몸 상태가 그의 목표를 바꿔 놓았다고도 했다. “가끔은 제 자신을 과대평가한 적도 있었다. 이제는 예전처럼 빠르게 던지지 못하고, 기계적 동작도 예전만큼 확실하지 않다고 받아들인다. 그래서 삼사 이닝 정도의 질 높은 투구에 집중하는 쪽이 팀에 더 도움이 될 것 같다.”라고 말했다.
