The world’s first deaf idol group, Big Ocean, released its third mini album, “THE GREATEST BATTLE,” presenting a more intense and restrained sound that reflects the group’s experiences as a K-pop act with hearing impairments. The release follows earlier works that emphasized brightness and hope.
At a media showcase in Seoul, members PJ, Chanyeon and Jiseok discussed the album, which includes eight tracks with double title songs “One Man Army” and “Cold Moon,” plus B-sides “Alive” and “Back,” and instrumental versions. The group described the project as a battle won after a difficult fight and said it conveys a message of support to others facing their own struggles.
“One Man Army” draws inspiration from the Joseon-era Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Battle of Myeongnyang, with all three members contributing to the composition. The track combines grand string arrangements with heavy 808 bass, and the group noted the story’s resonance with their own experiences in facing prejudice against disability.
Choreography for the performances includes ship-like formations and scenes of setting sail, with 20 dancers joining the trio on stage to represent opposing forces. The song “Cold Moon” uses the moon as a motif to explore the calm after hardship, featuring sign-language performance to ensure accessibility of the lyrics.
Big Ocean described battle as a lived reality shaped by bias, doubt and the pressure to break new ground. Jiseok emphasized that the happiness of making music has sustained them, and the trio aims to present their struggle as a larger message for anyone seeking visibility in their endeavors.
The group plans an overseas tour starting next month, with a launch in Chicago on April 10, followed by stops in New York, Minneapolis, Washington, Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles.

PJ는 안무에 항해를 시작하는 장면과 적군이 무리 지어 등장하는 선상 형상을 포함했으며, 20명의 댄서가 삼인조와 함께 무대에 합류한다고 설명했다. “One Man Army”가 외부적 대치를 상징한다면, “Cold Moon”은 내면으로의 침잠이다. 달을 모티프로 어려움 이후의 고요를 탐구한다. PJ는 “‘Cold Moon’은 단순하고 중독적인 가사를 통해 몰입하기 쉽다”라며 “‘One Man Army’처럼 이 노래에도 서명(Sign Language) 공연이 포함되어 있어 가사를 수화로도 명확하게 이해할 수 있다”고 말했다. 찬연은 빅 오션에 있어 전쟁은 비유에 그치지 않는 현실이라고 덧붙였다. 지석은 “청각 장애를 가졌다는 이유로 우리는 잘되지 못할 것이라는 말을 자주 들었다”라며 “다른 사람들이 정해 준 틀 안에서만 꿈꾸는 것이 두렵다. 음악을 즐길 때 느끼는 행복이 우리를 버티게 했다. 그래서 아이돌이 되려는 꿈을 함께 꾸었다”고 말했다. “THE GREATEST BATTLE”과 함께 세 멤버는 그 투쟁을 자신들만의 문제가 아니라 보이는 것에 도전하는 모든 사람들을 위한 공동의 찬가로 재구성한다. 그룹은 다음 달 미국 투어를 시작해 시카고에서 4월 10일을 시작으로 뉴욕, 미니애폴리스, 워싱턴 D.C., 애틀랜타, 댈러스, 로스앤젤레스까지 순회한다.
