A court on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for an independent lawmaker and a former Seoul city councilor over bribery allegations connected to the 2022 local elections.
The Seoul Central District Court issued warrants for Rep. Kang Sun-woo, formerly of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, and former councilor Kim Kyung, citing concerns they might destroy evidence. Prosecutors had sought their detention earlier last month.
Kang is accused of receiving 100 million won in cash from Kim ahead of the 2022 elections, allegedly in exchange for support for Kim’s nomination as a Democratic Party candidate for the Seoul city council.
Kang told reporters before her hearing that she apologized for the public concern and would provide a sincere explanation in court. She has maintained that she did not know the shopping bag Kim gave her contained cash and returned the money after discovering it three months later.
Police say Kang had prior knowledge of the cash and spent the funds on a rental deposit; Kim ultimately received the nomination and won a city council seat.
Kang’s hearing followed the National Assembly’s approval of a motion to arrest her last Tuesday. Under the law, sitting lawmakers are immune from arrest while the Assembly is in session and may be arrested only with consent from the body.
