Asiana Airlines announced that it will align its aircraft seat numbering system with Korean Air ahead of their planned integration later this year. The revision will be applied to all domestic and international flights operating from Dec. 14 to Dec. 17, with full implementation starting Dec. 18.
Under the changes, for all aircraft types except the A380, the starting row for business class will shift from Row 1 to Row 7, and economy class will begin at Row 28 instead of Row 10, according to a company spokesperson. For A380 aircraft, the economy class starting row on the lower deck will move from Row 30 to Row 28, while other seating arrangements remain unchanged.
The spokesperson stated that the changes only affect row numbering by aircraft type and class, with no physical changes to seat configurations.
Both airlines have said the unified Korean Air will launch next year after completing the merger process within this year. Industry sources and the Korean Air Pilots Union, which has about 2,500 members, indicate an internal target of Dec. 17 for the launch.
In late 2024, Korean Air completed a 1.8 trillion-won ($1.2 billion) acquisition of Asiana after securing approvals from antitrust regulators in 14 jurisdictions, including the European Union. Following the merger, Korean Air plans to absorb Asiana in a two-year post-merger integration, with Jin Air set to absorb Asiana’s budget affiliates Air Seoul and Air Busan, effectively dissolving Asiana, Air Seoul, and Air Busan once the PMI is finalized.
Asiana Airlines는 금요일 화요일 통합 예정에 앞서 항공기 좌석 번호 체계를 한진에 align할 것이라고 밝혔다. 해당 변경은 국내선 및 국제선 모든 항공편에 12월 14일부터 17일 사이에 적용되며, 12월 18일부터 전면 시행에 들어간다. 다양한 기종에 대해 비즈니스석의 시작 행은 1행에서 7행으로, 이코노미석은 10행에서 28행으로 각각 바뀌게 된다. 다만 A380 기종의 경우, 하부 덱의 이코노미 시작 행은 30행에서 28행으로 이동하고, 다른 좌석 배치는 양대 덱 모두 변경 없이 유지된다. 해당 변경은 좌석 구성의 물리적 변화가 아닌, 기종별 및 등급별 행 번호 표기 방식의 변경일 뿐이라고 회사 대변인이 밝혔다. 두 항공사는 합병 절차를 마무리한 후 내년 중에 통합 Korean Air를 출범시킬 예정이라고 밝혔으며, 업계 소식통과 Korean Air 조종사노조 2,500명은 회사가 내부적으로는 12월 17일 출범을 목표로 하고 있다고 전했다. 2024년 말 Korean Air는 아시아나를 1조8천억원 규모의 인수에 성공했고, 유럽연합을 포함한 14개 관할당국의 반독점 규제 승인도 받았다. 당시 국적 항공사는 합병 후 2년 간의 PMI(통합 관리) 절차를 거쳐 아시아나를 흡수할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 저가 항공사인 진에어는 아시아나의 예산 자회사인 에어서울과 에어부산을 흡수할 예정이다. 아시아나항공, 에어서울, 에어부산은 PMI 프로그램이 완료되면 더 이상 존재하지 않게 된다.
