The defense ministry named Vice Adm. Kim Kyung-ryul as the new Navy chief, days after the former top officer offered to resign over alleged involvement in a botched martial law bid in late 2024.
Kim, 55, was appointed to succeed Adm. Kang Dong-gil as chief of naval operations and currently serves as commander of the Republic of Korea Fleet, the nation's leading naval operations unit.
Kim is set to be promoted to the rank of admiral to assume the new role and is expected to receive formal appointment from the president following Cabinet deliberation.
The nomination follows the defense ministry's decision to impose heavy disciplinary action on the former navy chief over involvement in the martial law incident.
Kang is alleged to have instructed a subordinate to support the establishment of a martial law command on the night of December 3, 2024, while serving as chief of the directorate of military support at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Kang offered to resign on March 4, after the ministry reportedly suspended him for one month over the allegations.
The deputy chief of the Navy has been acting in Kang’s duty since his removal on February 13.
The defense ministry said Kim possesses the necessary operational command capabilities and military expertise to safeguard maritime sovereignty amid regional security tensions and broader global instability.
