Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified from the Milan-C Cortina Games after refusing to back down over his helmet that depicts victims of Ukraine’s war with Russia. The helmet carries images of Ukrainian sportsmen and women killed since the 2022 invasion, and he had insisted he would continue to wear it in competition. The International Olympic Committee said he had been expelled for failing to adhere to the IOC athlete expression guidelines.
Ukraine’s president defended the athlete’s right to wear the helmet, but gestures of a political nature during competition are prohibited under the Olympic charter. The decision was described as a “moment of shame” by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, while Heraskevych posted on social media that the decision reflected “the price of our dignity.” He has the option to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but CAS has not heard from him.
The IOC said the skeleton racer’s accreditation was withdrawn after a final opportunity to change his mind, noting the decision was taken by the IBSF jury on the grounds that the helmet he intended to wear did not comply with the rules. Athletes are allowed to express views in press conferences and on social media, and the IOC had said it would make an exception by permitting a plain black armband during competition. He was able to display the helmet during training and could display it immediately after the competition when going through the mixed zone.
The Ukrainian athlete told reporters at the Cortina Sliding Centre that the decision was “totally wrong,” saying other cases in the Olympic Games showed different treatment in similar situations and accusing the move of aligning with Russian propaganda.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry met with Heraskevych early Thursday in a bid to persuade him to change his mind; she was described as emotional after the meeting. IOC officials said they had hoped he would compete to send a powerful message, emphasizing that the issue was not about the message but the placement and rules governing expressions. Kyiv reacted with fury, with the foreign minister calling the decision a stain on the IOC’s reputation and the sports minister threatening legal action.
Fans outside the Cortina Sliding Centre expressed disappointment, noting that the helmet honored real people who died and lamenting the ongoing war and hardships in Ukraine. Heraskevych had previously displayed a banner reading “No War in Ukraine” at the 2022 Beijing Games, days before Russia’s invasion escalated. The conflict has caused widespread destruction, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced since the invasion began.

그러나 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)는 이 선수가 선수 표현 가이드라인을 지키지 못해 밀라노-코르티나 대회에서 실격 처리했다고 밝혔다.
젤렌스키 대통령은 헬멧 착용 권리를 옹호했으나 경기 중의 정치적 제스처는 올림픽 헌장에서 금지된다고 IOC는 밝혔다.
IOC의 결정은 우크라이나 외무장관 안드리 시비가가 이를 ‘수치의 순간’으로 규정했고, 헤라스케비치는 X에 “This is (the) price of our dignity”라는 문구와 함께 헬멧 사진을 올렸다.
헤라스케비치는 CAS(국제스포츠중재재판소)에 항소할 수 있는 선택권이 있지만 CAS는 AFP에 아직 그에게서 연락을 받지 못했다고 밝혔다.
IOC는 성명에서 이 스켈레톤 선수의 자격이 최종적으로 마음을 바꿀 기회를 부여한 뒤 이를 거부해 자격이 박탈됐다고 밝혔다. “선수 표현 가이드라인을 준수하지 않은 데 따른 결정”이라고 덧붙였다. IBSF 심판단이 그가 입으려 한 헬멧이 규칙에 부합하지 않는다는 사실에 근거해 내린 조치이다.
선수들은 기자회견과 소셜 미디어에서의 의견 표현이 허용되며, 화요일 IOC는 헤라스케비치를 위해 대회 중 단색의 검은 팔밴드를 허용하는 예외를 두었다고 밝혔다. 또한 헤라스케비치는 모든 훈련에서 헬멧을 전시할 수 있었고, 대회가 끝난 직후 혼합 구역을 지날 때도 이를 전시할 수 있는 선택권이 제시됐다.
우크라이나 선수는 기자들에게 이번 결정이 ‘완전히 잘못됐다’고 말했다. 그는 “이번 올림픽에서 거의 같은 상황의 선수들이 다르게 대우받고 아무런 제재를 받지 않은 사례도 있었다”고 지적했다. 또한 “정말 나쁜 생각이 들고 이 상황이 러시아의 선전에 동조하는 것 같아 보인다”고 덧붙였다.
대회 전날 아침 이른 시간에 IOC 회장 커스티 코벤트리는 헤라스케비치를 만나 마음을 바꾸려는 최후의 시도를 했고, 면담 후 영상에 따르면 그녀는 울먹인 모습으로 남겼다.
키예프는 이 결정에 격분했고, 안드리 시비가 외무장관은 소셜 미디어에 “IOC가 우크라이나 선수의 자유를 금지한 것이 아니라 IOC의 명성을 금지했다”며 비판했고, “미래 세대는 이를 수치의 순간으로 기억할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 우크라이나 스포츠 장관 마트비이 비드니도 법적 조치를 취하겠다고 경고했다.
대변인 마크 애덤스는 브리핑에서 “그가 경쟁하기를 간절히 원했고 그것은 매우 강력한 메시지를 보냈을 것”이라며, “메시지의 내용이 아니라 그 자리에 관한 문제다. 선수들이 정치적 지배자로부터 압박을 받는 상황은 용납될 수 없다”고 말했다.
코르티나 슬라이딩 센터 밖의 우크라이나 팬들은 이 결정에 실망을 표했다. 키예프 출신의 이리나 나리바이코는 “헬멧에 담긴 사진은 러시아의 침공으로 실제로 죽은 사람들이다. 전쟁은 아직 진행 중이고 우리는 여전히 추위에 떨고 전력도 없다. 이는 용납될 수 없다”라고 말했다.
헤라스케비치는 2022년 베이징 동계올림픽에서 “No War in Ukraine”라는 현수막을 들고 나타난 바 있다. 전쟁은 도시를 파괴하고 수만 명의 군인과 민간인이 사망하게 하였으며 수백만 명이 집을 떠나야 했다.
