Korean short track speed skaters trained at Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Korea is projected to win three gold medals and finish 14th in the medal table at the Milan-Cortina Games, according to projections by a Canadian sports data analytics firm.
The national committee overseeing Korea's participation has set a goal of at least three gold medals, one more than the country's total at the 2022 Beijing Games.
As projected, snowboarder Choi Gaon is expected to win the women's halfpipe, while short track speed skater Kim Gil-li is forecast to win the women's 1,500-meter title and contribute to Korea's women’s 3,000-meter relay title.
If realized, Choi Gaon would become the first Korean to win an Olympic snowboard gold medal.
The analyst projects all other Korean medals would come from short track: a silver for Choi Min-jeong in the women’s 1,500 meters, a silver for the men’s 5,000-meter relay team, a bronze for Choi in the women’s 1,000 meters, and a bronze in the mixed 2,000-meter relay.
Korea has historically been strong in short track, having won more medals in the discipline than any other country with 26 golds and 53 medals overall.
The firm also forecasts several fourth-place finishes for Korea, including in women’s curling and the four-man bobsleigh.
Projections put Norway on top with 14 golds, followed by the United States with 13, Germany with 12, and Canada with 10; among Asian nations, Japan is projected to win five golds and China four, with Korea trailing.
The Milan-Cortina Games are scheduled to open with a ceremony on Friday and run through February 22.

한국은 쇼트트랙에서 가장 많은 메달을 획득한 나라로, 금메달 26개와 총 메달 53개를 기록했다.
해당 연구는 한국이 여자 아이스컬링과 남자 4인승 봅슬레이에서 몇 차례 4위에 그칠 가능성도 제시했다.
노르웨이가 금메달 14개로 1위로 전망되고, 미국은 13개, 독일은 12개, 캐나다는 10개로 뒤를 이을 것으로 예측됐다.
아시아 국가 가운데 일본은 금메달 5개, 중국은 4개로 한국보다 앞설 것으로 전망됐다.
밀란-코르티나 동계올림픽 개막식은 금요일에 열리고 2월 22일에 막을 내릴 예정이다.
