Manager Ryu Ji-hyun of the South Korean national baseball team addressed reporters at Incheon International Airport on Friday before departing for Saipan to establish a training camp ahead of the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
As South Korea prepares for the WBC in Tokyo in March, Ryu expressed hope that his roster will include up to four foreign-born players of Korean descent. He took nearly 30 players, primarily from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), to Saipan for the national team's preliminary camp.
Among the camp roster are Kim Hye-seong, a utility player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Go Woo-suk, a reliever who recently signed with the Detroit Tigers. Ryu is optimistic about the participation of additional Major League Baseball (MLB) players during the tournament scheduled from March 5 to 17.
The WBC's eligibility rules allow players to represent the country of one of their parents, even if they were not born there. In the 2023 WBC, South Korea featured Gold Glove-winning infielder Tommy Edman, who is unavailable this time due to ankle surgery. However, Ryu mentioned that Detroit Tigers outfielder Jahmai Jones and St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Riley O'Brien, both U.S. natives with Korean mothers, are likely to join the team.
"We've taken all the steps we could, and I think there should be some sort of an official approval from the WBC organizers before the end of January," Ryu stated. He added that both O'Brien and Jones have shown strong interest in participating, and he expects around three to four such players to be available.
Jones, 28, had a standout 2025 season with the Tigers, achieving career highs with 72 games played, seven home runs, and a batting line of .287/.387/.550. O'Brien also had a notable season, posting a 2.06 ERA over 48 innings in 42 appearances.
Other targeted players include half-Korean pitcher Dane Dunning and veteran outfielder Rob Refsnyder, who was born in Korea but adopted by an American family.
Ryu emphasized that the Saipan camp will primarily focus on pitchers gradually increasing their workload, as they typically would not be ramping up training in January for a high-intensity competition in March.
"I spoke to the players about the need to meet and train early in the year, and I felt we all needed to be on the same page to make the most of this opportunity," Ryu remarked. He noted that the players responded positively to the early training.
Veteran pitchers, including Hanwha Eagles starter Ryu Hyun-jin and SSG Landers reliever Noh Kyung-eun, will also participate in the camp. Ryu highlighted the importance of veterans setting a good example for younger players.
Following the Saipan camp, which concludes on January 21, the national team will hold another camp in Okinawa, Japan, in mid-February. U.S.-based players will not participate in this camp as they will need to join their respective clubs for spring training.
Two other South Korean MLB players, Kim Ha-seong and Lee Jung-hoo, will not attend the Saipan camp and will only meet the national team in Japan if they receive permission from their clubs.
South Korea aims to advance beyond the preliminary round in this year's WBC for the first time since reaching the final in 2009.

내년 3월 도쿄에서 열리는 WBC에 출전하는 대한민국 팀의 감독인 류 감독은 최대 4명의 외국 태생 한국계 선수가 로스터에 포함되기를 희망하고 있다.
류 감독은 대부분 한국야구위원회(KBO) 소속의 선수들로 구성된 30명의 선수를 사이판으로 데려가 예비 캠프를 실시하고 있으며, 로스터에 포함된 미국 소속 선수로는 로스앤젤레스 다저스의 유틸리티 플레이어 김혜성, 그리고 최근 디트로이트 타이거스와 마이너리그 계약을 체결한 구우석이 있다.
류 감독은 3월 5일부터 17일까지 열리는 대회에서 다른 메이저리그(MLB) 선수들도 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
WBC의 유연한 자격 규정 덕분에 선수들은 부모 중 한 명의 출생 국가를 대표할 수 있다. 2023 WBC에서는 한국 엄마에게서 태어난 미국 출신 내야수 토미 에드먼이 금글러브 수상자로 참가했다.
에드먼은 발목 수술로 이번 대회에 출전할 수 없지만, 류 감독은 한국계 어머니를 둔 디트로이트 타이거스 외야수 자마이 존스와 세인트루이스 카디널스 투수 라일리 오브라이언이 WBC에서 대한민국을 대표할 가능성이 높다고 전했다.
류 감독은 인천국제공항에서 기자들에게 "우리는 최선을 다했고, 1월 말까지 WBC 주최측의 공식 승인이 있어야 할 것"이라며 "오브라이언과 존스는 강한 의사를 표명했으며, 큰 문제가 없다면 팀에 합류할 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다. 그는 전체적으로 3~4명의 선수들이 가능할 것이라고 예상했다.
존스는 2025 시즌에 디트로이트에서 72경기를 뛰며 7홈런, 23타점을 기록하며 커리어 최고 성적을 올렸다. 오브라이언 또한 30세에 42경기에서 48이닝을 소화하며 2.06의 평균자책점을 기록하며 커리어 최고의 시즌을 보냈다.
KBO가 주목하는 다른 선수들로는 136경기를 소화한 한인 혼혈 투수 데인 던닝과 아기 때 입양된 한국 태생의 베테랑 외야수 롭 레프스나이다.
류 감독은 사이판 캠프는 주로 투수들이 점차적으로 운동량을 늘릴 수 있는 기회가 될 것이라며 "이번 캠프는 WBC가 아닌 해에는 보통 1월에 고강도 대회를 준비하지 않기 때문에 중요하다"고 말했다.
이어 그는 "선수들에게 연초에 이렇게 훈련할 필요성을 이야기했고, 모든 선수들이 이 기회를 최대한 활용해야 한다는 데 동의했다"고 덧붙였다. "선수들이 따뜻한 환경에서 훈련함으로써 좋은 컨디션을 유지할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.
류 감독은 한화 이글스의 선발투수 류현진과 SSG 랜더스의 투수 노경은과 같은 베테랑 투수들도 캠프에 데려가며 이들이 오랜 시간 동안 좋은 성적을 낸 이유를 젊은 선수들이 직접 깨닫기를 바란다고 전했다.
사이판 캠프가 1월 21일 종료된 후 대한민국 팀은 2월 중순 오키나와에서 또 다른 캠프를 진행할 예정이다. 류 감독은 미국 소속 선수들은 스프링 트레이닝을 위해 개별 팀에 합류해야 하므로 그 시점에서 참여하지 못할 것이라고 밝혔다.
또한, 아틀란타 브레이브스의 김하성 선수와 샌프란시스코 자이언츠의 이정후 선수는 이달 사이판으로 가지 않으며, 각 팀의 허가를 받을 경우 일본에서 열리는 첫 라운드 경기에서 조우할 예정이라고 전했다.
류 감독은 "이정후와 김하성은 초기부터 자신들의 오프시즌 훈련 루틴이 있다고 얘기했다"며 "이번 캠프에 참여하지 않는 것에는 문제가 없다"고 강조했다.
올해 WBC에서 대한민국은 2009년 이후 처음으로 예선 라운드를 통과하려고 노력하고 있다.
