Harman International, the audio electronics unit of Samsung Electronics, has acquired the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) business from Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen for 1.5 billion euros ($1.77 billion), enhancing Samsung's presence in the electric auto parts sector. The deal is expected to be finalized next year.
This acquisition represents Samsung’s first move in automotive mergers and acquisitions since purchasing Harman in 2017. It follows several other acquisitions this year, including those of Germany's FlaktGroup in climate control and the audio business of U.S.-based Masimo, as well as the digital health firm Xealth.
ZF Friedrichshafen is recognized as a leading manufacturer of electric auto parts, particularly for its smart camera technology that supports driver assistance, positioning it as a significant player in the global ADAS market.
Samsung stated that the acquisition will facilitate Harman’s entry into the growing ADAS market by acquiring essential technologies and products, such as forward-facing automotive cameras and ADAS controllers.
As software-defined vehicles (SDVs) are seen as the future of the automotive industry, electronic auto parts manufacturers are shifting their focus to centralized controllers that integrate digital cockpits and ADAS functions.
With this acquisition, Harman aims to incorporate ZF’s ADAS technologies into its digital cockpit offerings, thus paving the way for a centralized control system that positions the company favorably in the SDV market.
The global market for ADAS and centralized controllers is projected to increase from 62.6 trillion won ($42.2 billion) in 2023 to 189.3 trillion won by 2035.
Harman's CEO noted that the acquisition will enhance Harman’s product range and provide a strategic advantage in supplying centralized controllers within the automotive electronics sector. He emphasized the company's commitment to aiding automakers in their transition to SDVs by leveraging both automotive electronics expertise and Samsung's technological strengths.
Since becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung in 2017, Harman has significantly contributed to the parent company’s revenues, doubling its revenue from 7.1 trillion won to 14.3 trillion won last year, while maintaining an operating margin of 10 percent.
Automotive electronics remain a key priority for Samsung’s future growth strategy, as underscored by recent meetings between company executives and leading figures in the automotive sector to explore collaborative opportunities.

삼성전자는 화요일 독일 회사와 15억 유로(약 17.7억 달러)에 ADAS 사업을 인수하는 계약을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 이번 거래는 내년에 마무리될 것으로 예상된다.
이번 인수는 삼성전자가 2017년 하만을 인수한 이후 처음으로 자동차 부문에서의 인수합병을 진행하는 것이며, 이는 올해 발표된 여러 인수 중 하나로, 독일의 플락트그룹(기후 제어), ADAS 사업, 미국의 마시모 오디오 사업 및 미국의 디지털 헬스 기업 제얼스(제하 게이트) 등이 포함된다.
ZF는 세계적인 전기 자동차 부품 제조업체로, ADAS 사업 부문에서 운전 보조를 위한 스마트 카메라 시장에서 글로벌 리드를 차지하고 있다.

회사는 ADAS 및 중앙 집중식 컨트롤러의 글로벌 시장 규모가 올해 62.6조 원(약 422억 달러)에서 2035년에는 189.3조 원으로 성장할 것으로 예상하고 있다.
하만의 CEO인 크리스티안 소봇카는 “인수는 하만의 제품 포트폴리오에 ADAS를 추가하고 자동차 전자 시장에서 중앙 집중식 컨트롤러를 공급할 전략적 입지를 제공한다”고 말했다. “하만은 삼성의 기술적 리더십과 결합하여 자동차 제조업체의 SDV로의 전환을 적극 지원할 것이다.”
이번 인수는 하만이 삼성전자의 수익에 기여하고 있는 가운데 이루어졌다. 2017년 삼성의 완전 자회사로 편입된 이후 하만의 매출은 지난 8년 간 두 배로 증가해 7.1조 원에서 지난해 14.3조 원에 이르렀다. 또한, 하만은 10%의 안정적인 운영 마진을 유지하고 있다.
자동차 전자 제품은 삼성전자 이재용 회장이 기술 대기업의 미래 성장을 위해 우선순위를 두고 있는 성장 추진력 중 하나다.
지난달 이 회장과 소봇카는 한국에서 메르세데스-벤츠 그룹 회장 올라 칼레니우스와 만나 미래 모빌리티 사업에 대한 협력을 논의했다. 3월에는 이 회장이 BYD 본사와 중국 베이징의 샤오미 전기차 공장을 방문하여 삼성 계열사와의 자동차 전자 분야 협력 기회를 모색하기도 했다.
