The Kia Tigers announced on Thursday the re-signing of free agent pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong to a new contract.
Yang, 37, has agreed to a two-year deal, which includes an option for a third year, valued at up to 4.5 billion won (approximately $3.1 million), inclusive of incentives.
Having spent his entire Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) career with the Tigers since being drafted first overall in 2006, this agreement likely ensures that Yang will conclude his career with the team in his hometown of Gwangju.
Yang holds the record for the most career strikeouts in KBO history, totaling 2,185. He also leads all KBO pitchers with 442 starts and 184 wins, while ranking second with 2,656 2/3 innings pitched.
Notably, he is the only pitcher in KBO history to achieve at least 1,500 innings in 11 consecutive seasons. Yang has secured three Korean Series titles with the Tigers in 2009, 2017, and 2024.
In the 2025 season, Yang recorded a 7-9 record with a 5.06 ERA over 30 starts, marking his lowest win total and highest ERA in twelve years, as the Tigers did not qualify for the postseason.
A two-time MVP, Yang ranks second on the all-time wins list with 186, trailing former Hanwha Eagles pitcher Song Jin-woo by 24 wins. Song also holds the record for the most innings pitched in KBO history with 3,003, a milestone Yang aims to reach during his new contract.
"I've won championships and set many records in a Tigers uniform but my job is not finished," Yang stated. "Until the moment I take off this uniform, I'd like to be a consistent performer for our Tigers fans. As a veteran player, I will share my experience and know-how with younger teammates, and help bring the team together so that we can win another title."
Despite losing several key players in free agency this offseason, including designated hitter Choi Hyoung-woo and All-Star shortstop Park Chan-ho, the Tigers successfully retained Yang, a longstanding figure in the franchise.

2025년 양현종은 30경기에서 7승 9패, 평균자책점 5.06을 기록하며 지난 12년간 가장 적은 승수와 가장 높은 평균자책점을 기록했으며, 타이거즈는 타이틀 방어에 실패했다.
2017년 정규 시즌과 한국 시리즈 MVP인 양현종은 통산 186승으로 역대 투수 중 2위를 기록하고 있으며, 한화 이글스의 전설 송진우와는 24승 차이가 난다. 송진우는 3003이닝을 던진 역대 기록 보유자이며, 양현종은 새로운 계약 기간 동안 이 기록에 도전할 계획이다.
