A law professor from Seoul National University has criticized media reports that disclosed actor Cho Jin-woong's past as a juvenile offender, stating that the coverage undermines the principles of juvenile justice and has unfairly pressured him into retirement.
Han In-sup, professor emeritus at the university, expressed his views on Facebook, asserting that Cho's decision to retire is misguided. He emphasized that the focus of criticism should be directed toward the media outlet that uncovered the decades-old records, specifically mentioning entertainment outlet Dispatch. “The media that attempted to bury a person alive by unearthing a past from decades ago deserves stern criticism,” he stated.
Han highlighted that Cho had already faced legal consequences for his actions during his youth. “Cho Jin-woong made mistakes as an adolescent and received appropriate legal sanctions,” he noted. He further explained that the juvenile justice system aims to impose punishment while also providing opportunities for education and reform to prevent continued criminal behavior.
He praised Cho's subsequent achievements, stating, “The fact that the boy did not remain trapped in his dark past and instead worked for decades to reach a level of social recognition is something to be praised.” Han suggested that Cho could serve as a positive role model for young individuals facing similar challenges.
Han condemned the media's approach to revealing Cho's past, arguing that if anyone seeks to tarnish a person's current accomplishments by resurrecting old transgressions, society should criticize the media rather than the individual. “If someone, for any reason — whether personal, political or sensational — drags out a decades-old history to destroy a person’s current achievements, society should direct its criticism not at the entertainer, but at the media,” he stated.
Regarding Cho's unexpected retirement announcement, Han expressed disappointment, stating, “For Cho Jin-woong to halt all activities in response to such attempts is a very wrong solution. He should stand tall and rise to face this.”
Attorney Kim Jae-ryeon also commented on the situation, indicating that the media coverage violated the intent of the Juvenile Act, which aims to rehabilitate youths with antisocial tendencies. She noted that naming an actor who has since matured contradicts the law's purpose.
Cho announced his retirement on Saturday night, following the report by Dispatch about his teenage conduct. “I deeply apologize to everyone who trusted and supported me despite my disgraceful past," he stated through his agency, adding, “As of today, I will halt all activities and bring my acting career to an end.”
