SHINee’s Key has addressed a controversy involving alleged illegal medical procedures connected to a woman referred to as the ‘injection aunt,’ who is accused of practicing medicine without a license. Key expressed regret over his misunderstanding, stating he believed she was a licensed doctor.
SM Entertainment, Key’s agency, issued an official statement addressing the allegations against the woman, identified only as Lee. The agency apologized for the delay in their response, explaining that coordinating with various parties regarding overseas tour schedules made it challenging to provide a timely statement.
According to SM, Key was introduced to Lee through an acquaintance and met her at a hospital in Seoul’s Gangnam District, under the impression that she was a doctor. The agency confirmed that Key received treatment from Lee, both at the hospital and at home when visiting the hospital became difficult.
SM emphasized that Key was unaware of Lee's lack of a medical license, stating, “He believed Lee was a doctor, and as there was no indication otherwise, he did not think receiving treatment at home would be an issue.” The agency noted that Key only recently became aware of the controversy regarding Lee’s medical credentials and is feeling extremely confused about the situation. He is reportedly reflecting on his ignorance.
In response to the seriousness of the issue, Key has chosen to voluntarily step down from his scheduled activities and program appearances. The agency reiterated their apology to fans and the public for any concern caused.
Key also addressed the controversy on social media, expressing his sincere apologies for the distress caused by the situation. He acknowledged his confusion and surprise upon learning new facts and expressed regret for not being able to clarify his position sooner.
He stated, “I had believed I could keep myself distant from situations like this, but that confidence seems to have prevented me from looking more wisely at my surroundings. I feel deeply sorry and ashamed toward those who trusted and supported me.”
Key concluded by affirming his commitment to addressing the matter, stating, “I will take time to reflect on myself and my surroundings once again. I am truly sorry.”
