The Korean government has implemented corrective measures following a campaign by a nongovernmental organization aimed at addressing distorted representations of Africa in domestic textbooks, as reported on Wednesday.
The Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) announced that the Ministry of Education has initiated changes to reduce references to poverty and hunger in Africa while enhancing content related to the continent's population, technological advancements, and exchanges with Korea in eight elementary school social studies textbooks authorized in September.
The revisions have led to a decrease in discussions surrounding the "world hunger map," and negative portrayals of Africa, including those related to poverty, hunger, and refugees, have been minimized, according to VANK.
Instead, the updated content emphasizes Africa's growth potential, highlighting population growth and advancements in various sectors, including construction.
Furthermore, the textbooks now include expanded content on the cooperation between Korea and Africa, covering topics such as smartphone production resources and trade relations, in addition to existing agricultural support.
Earlier in the year, VANK identified a prevalence of prejudiced views regarding Africa in elementary school social studies textbooks, which prompted them to launch a campaign to correct these misrepresentations and seek assistance from the education ministry.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reportedly planning to promote these efforts to reshape domestic perceptions of Africa and leverage them in international diplomatic contexts.
Additionally, VANK is advocating for the use of the Equal Earth world map, which accurately represents Africa's size and shape, as opposed to the Mercator projection, which significantly diminishes the continent's appearance.
In March, VANK entered into an agreement with a major news agency to enhance understanding of Africa and foster increased exchanges between Korea and the continent.

대신, 아프리카의 인구 증가와 건설 등 분야의 기술 발전에 의한 성장 잠재력에 대한 주목이 이루어지고 있다고 덧붙였다.
또한, 한국과 아프리카 간의 교류에 관련된 내용이 확대되어 기존의 농업 지원 외에도 스마트폰 생산 자원 협력 및 무역 관계가 포함되었다.
올해 초, VANK는 초등학교 사회과 교과서에 아프리카가 가난과 기아에 시달리는 대륙이라는 편견이 만연해 있다고 지적하며, 학교 교과서에서 아프리카에 대한 왜곡된 묘사를 수정하기 위한 캠페인을 시작하고 교육부에 왜곡 수정 지원을 요청했다.
외교부는 이러한 노력을 국내 아프리카 인식 개선과 국제 외교 무대에서 활용할 계획이라고 전해졌다.
VANK는 아프리카의 실제 크기와 형태를 반영하는 평등 지구본 사용을 권장하는 캠페인도 진행 중이며, 이는 대륙을 훨씬 작게 보이게 만드는 메르카토르 투영 지도 대신에 사용하자는 취지이다.
