Vice Trade Minister Park Jung-sung met with his European Union (EU) counterpart on Wednesday to discuss concerns regarding the EU's proposed steel safeguard measures and battery regulations.
During the meeting in Seoul with the director general for trade and economic security at the European Commission, Park expressed worries about the EU's plan to reduce tariff-free quotas on foreign steel by 47 percent starting in June 2026. He urged for the maximum export quota for Korean steelmakers, as reported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
Park also emphasized the need for consistency and predictability in the EU's battery regulations, highlighting significant investments made by Korean companies in Hungary, Poland, and other European nations to enhance local advanced battery manufacturing and supply chains.
Additionally, he called for a "fair" investigation by the EU into the Czech Republic's nuclear power plant project, which was secured by Seoul. He stressed that the Korean government and companies have adhered to foreign subsidy regulations throughout the bidding process.
The European Commission launched an investigation in May to determine whether the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), the project winner, received unfair foreign subsidies, following a complaint from France's EDF, a competitor in the bidding.
Furthermore, the two officials discussed strategies to strengthen the Korea-EU partnership on supply chains and economic security in light of increasing global trade uncertainties.
The ministry announced plans for an inaugural strategic dialogue on trade, supply chains, and technology in the first half of 2026, aimed at advancing bilateral cooperation into a more comprehensive partnership.

서울에서 열린 회의에서 박 장관은 유럽연합 집행위원회(EC) 무역 및 경제안보 담당 총괄 디렉터인 데니스 레돈네와 만나, 2026년 6월부터 외국 철강에 대한 무관세 쿼터를 47% 줄이려는 EU의 계획에 대해 우려를 제기하며, 한국 철강업체에 대한 최대 수출 쿼터를 요청했다.
또한 그는 배터리 규제에 대한 EU의 일관성과 예측 가능성을 요청하며, 한국 기업들이 헝가리, 폴란드 등 유럽 국가들에 대규모 투자를 해 경제의 첨단 배터리 제조 능력과 공급망 강화를 돕고 있다는 점을 강조했다.
박 장관은 또한 체코의 원자력 발전소 프로젝트에 대한 EU의 '공정' 조사를 요청하며, 한국 정부와 기업이 입찰 과정에서 외국 보조금 규정을 위반하지 않았다는 점을 강조했다.
EC는 프랑스 EDF의 불만으로, 한국수력원자력(KHNP)이 부당한 외국 보조금을 받았는지를 조사하기 위해 5월 체코 원자력 에너지 프로젝트에 대한 외국 보조금 규정 조사를 시작했다.
부처에 따르면 박 장관과 레돈네는 글로벌 무역 불확실성이 커지는 가운데 공급망 및 경제안보에 대한 한-EU 파트너십 강화 방안에 대해서도 논의했다.
양측은 2026년 상반기 중 무역, 공급망 및 기술에 관한 첫 번째 전략 대화를 개최하여 양국 간 협력을 보다 포괄적이고 발전된 파트너십으로 발전시킬 계획이라고 부처는 덧붙였다.
