President Lee Jae Myung on Friday ordered the antitrust watchdog to “drastically increase” its workforce to enhance regulatory oversight of companies that disrupt market fairness through stricter fines and penalties.
During a policy briefing with the Fair Trade Commission (FTC), Lee urged the agency to expand its staff by approximately 500 individuals, in addition to its prior plan to increase its workforce by 167 positions by 2026. He emphasized the importance of the FTC's role in protecting economically vulnerable groups from unfair practices.
Lee expressed a firm regulatory approach towards large firms that hinder their subcontractors from securing supply deals with other companies, stating, “The watchdog should protect the weak, and never provide any unfair favor to the strong.”
He further criticized large corporations, asserting that imposing significant fines alongside a larger workforce would effectively deter unfair lobbying activities. “The FTC should impose large-scale fines and increase the number of investigating workers by a large margin,” he stated.
Additionally, Lee requested the FTC to develop policy measures aimed at imposing economic penalties on firms that fail to cooperate with investigations conducted by the agency. FTC Chairman Ju Biung-ghi also indicated a commitment to transitioning the watchdog's regulatory approach towards economic sanctions, aligning with Lee’s directive.

이재명 대통령은 금요일 반독점 감시기구인 공정거래위원회에 “인력을 대폭 늘려” 시장을 교란하는 기업을 엄격한 벌금과 처벌로 보다 효과적으로 규제할 것을 주문했다.
이 대통령은 공정거래위원회(FTC)의 정책 브리핑에서 공정거래위원회의 인력을 약 500명 늘리고, 불공정 내부 거래나 기타 부당한 사업 관행을 저지르는 기업에 대해 harsher한 벌금을 부과할 것을 촉구했다. 공정거래위원회는 이전에 2026년에 인력을 167명 늘리기로 결정한 바 있다.
“공정거래위원회의 기본 임무는 경제적으로 약한 사람들이 불공정한 피해를 입지 않도록 막는 것”이라고 이 대통령은 브리핑 중에 말했다.
그는 또한 대기업들이 하청업체가 다른 회사와의 공급 계약을 체결하지 못하도록 차단하는 것에 대해 강력한 규제 입장을 전했다.
“감시기구는 약자를 보호해야 하며, 결코 강자에게 불공정한 favor를 제공해서는 안 된다”고 이 대통령은 말했다.
이어 그는 대기업에 대해 비판적인 발언을 강화하며 “대규모 벌금과 대규모 인력 투입이 불공정 로비 행위를 줄이는 데 매우 효과적일 것”이라고 강조했다.
“공정거래위원회는 대규모 벌금을 부과하고 조사 인력을 대폭 늘려야 한다”고 이 대통령은 덧붙였다.
그는 또한 공정거래위원회에 감시기구의 조사를 따르지 않는 기업에 대한 경제적 처벌을 부과하기 위한 정책적 대책을 마련할 것을 요청했다.
공정거래위원회 위원장인 주형기 또한 최근 이 대통령의 규제 stance에 맞춰 처벌 중심의 규제를 경제적 제재로 전환할 의사를 재차 밝혔다.
