Korean TV star Park Na-rae has addressed an abuse-of-power controversy involving two former managers who, according to her agency, reportedly demanded substantial payouts following their resignations.
Park, a prominent comedian and variety personality, became the focus of online debate this week after local reports indicated that staff had accused her of unfair treatment. These claims quickly gained traction on social media, igniting discussions among the MZ-generation — a term referring to millennials and Gen Z — and prompting inquiries into employee treatment within Korea’s entertainment sector.
On December 5, her agency, Npark Co., stated that it is currently “checking the exact facts” concerning media reports stemming from statements made by Park and her former managers.
Npark revealed that the two employees, who had been with Park for approximately 15 months, recently resigned and received standard severance packages. However, after this, they allegedly requested an additional payment equal to 10 percent of the company’s revenue from the previous year, a figure that reportedly escalated to several hundred million won.
The agency characterized itself as a “small, single-artist management company,” noting that the former employees raised concerns over delays in the company’s registration under Korea’s pop-culture business regulations. Npark attributed these delays to one employee, who allegedly “falsely reported” that the process was complete. The agency is now in the final stages of completing its registration.
According to Npark, the former managers continued to exert pressure on Park and the agency, with their financial demands increasing over time, which has caused Park considerable emotional distress.
“Park Na-rae is experiencing heavy psychological stress and mental shock due to the sudden resignations, the baseless accusations that followed, the escalating monetary demands, and additional pressure through media reports,” the agency stated.
While acknowledging some shortcomings in her management practices, Park reportedly expressed her intention to accept responsibility where warranted. However, the agency asserted that Park cannot comply with unilateral demands based on claims they believe to be untruthful and indicated plans to pursue legal action.
