The opposition has intensified pressure on the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) to accept their proposal for an inquiry. This demand comes in the context of the DPK's own efforts to pursue a second round of special investigations that include allegations surrounding former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law imposition, former first lady Kim Keon Hee, and the drowning of a Marine corporal during a flood rescue operation.
The PPP aims to leverage the Unification Church scandal to counter what they perceive as the DPK's attempt to dominate the political agenda by focusing on “rooting out insurrection supporters” linked to Yoon's martial law declaration, expressing concerns about the potential impact on upcoming local elections in June.
PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog emphasized the party's commitment to collaborating with other opposition factions, including the Reform Party, in their pursuit of an investigation into whether ruling party affiliates received illicit funds from the Unification Church. He indicated that legislative plans were already in progress and that consultations with opposition parties would commence shortly.
PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok reiterated the need for the appointment of a special prosecutor, asserting that those opposed to the appointment may be complicit. He criticized the president's remarks regarding the dissolution of religious organizations, suggesting that this represented an attempt to suppress the Unification Church.
The Reform Party has echoed the PPP's stance, with senior spokesperson Lee Dong-hoon stating that the Unification Church situation exemplifies the necessity for a special prosecutor, rebutting the DPK’s claim that the issue should be resolved by police intervention.
In contrast, the DPK remains opposed to any special counsel investigation concerning the Unification Church allegations. Party officials are focused on mitigating the political fallout from the unfolding scandal, particularly related to DPK associates. They have publicly distanced themselves from the call for a special prosecutor, with leader Jung Chung-rae declaring that such an action is “absolutely impossible.”
DPK representatives contend that their pursuit of investigations against the previous administration is justified, asserting that these matters are distinct from the Unification Church controversy. Floor deputy leader Kim Gi-pyo insisted that the investigations aim to correct previous shortcomings and are legitimate, while maintaining that there is adequate scope for police investigations into any allegations against DPK figures.

국민의힘 장동혁 대표도 특별검사 임명을 요구하며 “특별검사에 반대하는 이들은 범죄자들”이라고 말하며, 이재명 대통령의 종교단체 해산 발언을 비판하고 “통일교를 침묵시키려 한다”고 주장했다.
장 대표는 “만약 더불어민주당과 대통령 측근이 깊고 넓게 연루되지 않았다면 왜 대통령 스스로가 압박을 가했겠느냐?”라며 “이는 대통령과 관련된 권력 중심의 범죄 은폐”라고 강조했다. “특별검사를 요구하는 명확한 정당성을 제공하는 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
개혁당 역시 국민의힘의 움직임에 합세했다. 개혁당의 고위 대변인 이동훈은 성명을 통해 통일교 스캔들은 “특별검사가 필요한 사건”이라며, 더불어민주당의 경찰 수사 주장에 대해 “고양이가 물고기를 지키라고 하는 것과 같다”고 밝혔다.
하지만 더불어민주당은 통일교 논란에 대한 특별검사 조사를 강력히 거부하고 있다.
당 지도부는 여당과 관련된 인물들의 혐의를 포함한 확산되는 스캔들이 정치적 영향을 미치는 것을 방지하려 하고 있다. 공개적으로는 야당의 별도의 특별검사 요구에 대해 선을 긋고 있지만, 당 관계자들은 공적 회의에서 해당 문제를 다루는 것을 피해왔다.
더불어민주당의 고위 대변인 박수현에 따르면, 당의 정청래 대표는 이번 주 초 비공식 지도부 회의에서 통일교 관련 혐의를 처리하기 위한 특별검사 수용은 “절대 불가능하다”며 “잠시도 고려할 가치가 없다”고 말했다.
야당 연합은 스캔들에 대해 특별검사를 거부하면서도 전 정부에 대한 두 번째 조사를 추진하는 더불어민주당의 위선성을 비난하고 있으나, 더불어민주당 관계자들은 두 사안이 근본적으로 다르다고 주장하고 있다.
김기표 원내대표는 화요일 라디오 인터뷰에서 “3차 특별검사 요청은 기존 수사의 불완전성을 보완하기 위한 것”이며 “따라서 전적인 정당성을 지닌다”고 말했다.
그는 “이는 전혀 다른 차원의 문제이며, 동일하게 비교해서는 안 된다”며 “통일교 사건에 대해서는 경찰이 더불어민주당 관련 인물에 대한 철저한 조사를 충분히 이행할 수 있는 여지가 있다”고 덧붙였다.
