The SSG Landers have officially signed former Major League Baseball pitcher Drew VerHagen to a one-year contract valued at up to $900,000, the team announced on Saturday. This signing coincides with reports of the departure of the Landers' former ace, Drew Anderson, who is expected to return to the major leagues.
VerHagen, 35, will earn a salary of $750,000, in addition to a $50,000 signing bonus and $100,000 in performance incentives. Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 2012 MLB draft, VerHagen made his major league debut with the Tigers in 2014 and remained with the team until the conclusion of the 2019 season.
He spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league. After returning to the U.S. to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022 and 2023, VerHagen rejoined the Fighters for the past two seasons.
In a total of 206 MLB games, VerHagen recorded an 18-12 win-loss record with a 4.98 ERA, accumulating 234 strikeouts and 115 walks over 281 2/3 innings. His performance in Triple-A was significantly different, with 56 of his 76 outings as a starter, leading to a 20-20 record and a 3.98 ERA over 323 1/3 innings.
During his four seasons in NPB, VerHagen achieved an 18-19 record with a 3.68 ERA, tallying 278 strikeouts and 78 walks across 283 1/3 innings. In 2025, he played more games for the Fighters' minor league affiliate than their NPB club.
The Landers characterized VerHagen as an aggressive pitcher capable of overpowering hitters, noting his ability to throw fastballs that can reach up to 155 kph, along with other strong pitches including a slider, changeup, curveball, and sweeper. They expressed confidence in his ability to command the strike zone and manage challenging game situations, anticipating he will provide significant innings in their rotation.
In the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), teams are allowed to sign a maximum of two foreign-born pitchers, with plans to include an additional pitcher from an Asian country or Australia starting in 2026. The Landers had already signed Japanese pitcher Shota Takeda to fill their Asian quota, and VerHagen is expected to take Anderson's place, who is reportedly signing a one-year contract with the Tigers, pending a physical examination.
Anderson, 31, had a standout performance in the KBO, accumulating a 2.91 ERA and a 23-10 record over 287 1/3 innings during his two-year tenure with the Landers. He also led the league in strikeouts during that period.
In 2025, he finished second in the KBO with 245 strikeouts, marking a historic season in the league. Prior to his time in the KBO, Anderson played in the NPB and had a brief stint in MLB spanning several teams.
The Landers' other foreign-born pitcher, Mitch White, had a successful season in 2025, achieving an 11-4 record with a 2.87 ERA over 24 starts.
