Korean speed skaters secured medals in the mass start events at the recent International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup in the Netherlands.
Chung Jae-won won a silver medal in the men's mass start competition at Thialf in Heerenveen, finishing with a time of 7:25.568. Jorrit Bergsma of the Netherlands took first place with a time of 7:24.963, while Dutch skater Bart Hoolwerf claimed the bronze in 7:25.941.
This victory marks Chung's second consecutive silver medal in the mass start category this ISU World Cup season, following his performance in Calgary, Canada, last month.
During the race, which featured 24 skaters, Chung started at the back of the pack and was in 15th place after 13 laps of the 16-lap event. He surged ahead to fourth place with two laps remaining and recorded the fastest split time over the final lap at 24.060 seconds to secure his second-place finish.
In the women's mass start, Park Ji-woo achieved a historic milestone by winning a bronze medal with a time of 8:08.285, marking her first career ISU World Cup medal. In a close finish, she managed to outpace Ivanie Blondin of Canada, who clocked in at 8:08.301.
Marijke Groenewoud from the Netherlands won the gold in the women's event with a time of 8:07.660, followed by Mia Manganello from the United States, who finished with a time of 8:07.924.
This event was the third of five scheduled stops in the Speed Skating World Cup for the season. The next competition is set to take place in Hamar, Norway, this weekend, with the final event planned for January in Inzell, Germany.
