Song Sung-mun of the Kiwoom Heroes hit an RBI double against the LG Twins during a Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season game at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on September 9. The Kiwoom Heroes, who have not won a championship since their entry into the KBO in 2008, have distinguished themselves by sending players to Major League Baseball (MLB) more than any other team over the past 17 years.
On Tuesday morning, the San Diego Padres announced a four-year contract with Song, making him the sixth player from the Heroes to sign with an MLB team. The Heroes expressed their congratulations, stating, "We are proud to have the sixth member of the Heroes join the majors. We hope he will continue to play well on an even bigger stage, and we will be rooting for him as he embarks on a new challenge."
In total, 10 KBO players have signed with MLB teams through the posting process, with all six position players originating from the Heroes. The four pitchers signed came from different KBO clubs. Kang Jung-ho was the first to make the leap, signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates before the 2015 season, followed by Park Byung-ho (Minnesota Twins), Kim Ha-seong (San Diego Padres), Lee Jung-hoo (San Francisco Giants), and Kim Hye-seong (Los Angeles Dodgers).
The last three players mentioned are still active in MLB, with Kim Ha-seong recently signing with the Atlanta Braves in free agency. Song has played alongside all three in the KBO and will join them in the National League West, where he will compete against the Giants and Dodgers 13 times each in 2026, and face the Braves seven times.
In addition to their reputation as the leading producer of MLB-level talent, the Heroes also benefit financially from sending players to the majors. KBO clubs receive a "release fee" when they lose a player to MLB via posting, which is based on the guaranteed portion of the player's contract.
For contracts with a guaranteed amount under $25 million, the release fee is 20 percent of the total guaranteed amount. In Song's case, with a reported deal worth $15 million, the Padres will pay the Heroes $3 million, along with a supplemental release fee of 15 percent on salary escalators triggered.
Should Song win the 2026 Rookie of the Year award, his salary for 2027 will increase by $1 million. If he finishes among the top five in MVP voting, his salary will rise by $1 million per year for the remainder of his contract. The release fee structure includes 20 percent of the first $25 million and 17.5 percent of any amount exceeding that.
The Heroes have accumulated over $40 million in release fees from their players moving to MLB.

송성문은 이들 세 선수와 모두 KBO에서 함께 뛰었으며, 이제는 이와 김혜성과 함께 내셔널 리그 서부지구에서 활동하게 된다.
파드리스는 2026년에 자이언츠 및 다저스와 13차례, 브레이브스와는 7차례 맞붙게 된다.

KBO 구단은 포스팅을 통해 MLB로 선수를 잃을 경우 "해제 비용"을 받으며, 이 금액은 선수 계약의 보장 금액에 따라 달라진다.
선수의 MLB 계약의 총 보장 금액이 2,500만 달러 미만일 경우 해제 비용은 총 보장 금액의 20%이다.
송성문의 경우 계약액이 1,500만 달러로 보도되었으며, 파드리스는 히어로즈에 300만 달러를 지급해야 하고, 급여 상승에 따라 발생하는 추가 해제 비용 15%도 지급해야 한다.
연합뉴스에 따르면, 송성문이 2026년 신인상을 수상할 경우 2027년 급여는 100만 달러 증가하고, MVP 투표에서 상위 5위에 들 경우 남은 계약 기간 동안 매년 100만 달러씩 급여가 상승한다.
해제 비용은 처음 2,500만 달러의 20%와 그 다음 2,500만 달러를 초과하는 금액의 17.5%이다.
예를 들어, 선수가 5,000만 달러 이상 계약을 맺을 경우, 그의 이전 KBO 팀은 처음 2,500만 달러의 20% (500만 달러)와 다음 2,500만 달러의 17.5% (437만 5천 달러) 및 5,000만 달러 초과 금액의 15%를 받게 된다.
히어로즈는 지금까지 4,000만 달러 이상의 해제 비용을 받았다.
