Hwang Jae-gyun, an All-Star infielder in the Korean baseball league, announced his retirement on Friday at the age of 38 after an extensive career spanning 18 seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) and a brief stint in Major League Baseball.
The KT Wiz, Hwang's final team, confirmed his decision to retire, noting his significant contributions to the sport during his career, which included a short time with the San Francisco Giants in 2017.
Hwang made his KBO debut in 2007 with the now-defunct Hyundai Unicorns and played for the Woori Heroes for two seasons before being traded to the Lotte Giants in 2010. He remained with the Giants until 2016, earning the MVP award at the 2012 All-Star Game.
After a limited appearance in 18 games with the San Francisco Giants, Hwang returned to the KBO in 2017 by signing with the KT Wiz, where he played until his retirement. He was instrumental in leading the Wiz to their first Korean Series title in 2021 as team captain and received a Golden Glove award in 2020 for his performance at third base.
Internationally, Hwang represented his country and won gold medals at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games. In the 2025 season, he recorded a batting average of .275 with seven home runs and 48 RBIs, achieving over 100 hits for 14 consecutive seasons, a feat accomplished by only seven players in KBO history.
Although he became a free agent this offseason and received a favorable offer from the Wiz, Hwang decided it was time to retire. His career statistics include 2,200 games played, a .287 batting average, 227 home runs, 1,121 RBIs, 235 steals, and 2,266 hits. He ranks seventh in KBO history for games played and hits and is one of only three players to achieve at least 200 home runs and 200 steals.
In his retirement statement, Hwang expressed gratitude for his experiences, stating, "During my career, I enjoyed the greatest thrill ever by winning the Korean Series title, and I also had the honor of representing the country at the Olympics and the Asian Games. I've been happy as a baseball player." He thanked his family, coaches, and teammates for their support throughout his career.
The KT Wiz announced plans to hold a retirement ceremony for Hwang early in the next season.

황재균의 마지막 팀인 KT Wiz는 그가 18시즌을 국내에서, 그리고 2017년에 샌프란시스코 자이언츠에서의 짧은 경력을 마치고 은퇴하기로 결정했다고 밝혔다.

2025년에는 112경기에서 타율 .275로 7홈런, 48타점을 기록하였으며, 108개의 안타를 기록함으로써 KBO 역사상 14년 연속 100안타 이상을 기록한 일곱 번째 선수가 되었다.
그는 이번 오프시즌에 자유계약선수(FA)가 되었다. Wiz가 "좋은 제안"을 했지만, 그는 은퇴할 때가 되었다고 결심했다고 밝혔다.
황재균은 2,200경기를 소화하며 .287의 타율, 227홈런, 1,121타점, 235도루, 2,266개의 안타를 기록했다. 그는 경기에 출전한 횟수와 안타에서 모두 역사상 7위에 올라 있으며, 200홈런과 200도루 이상을 기록한 KBO 선수 중 세 명 중 하나다.
황재균은 "내 경력 동안 한국 시리즈 우승을 하며 최고의 짜릿함을 느꼈고, 올림픽과 아시안 게임에서 나라를 대표하는 영광도 누렸다"고 말했다. "나는 야구 선수로서 행복했다. 내가 꾸준히 필드에 남아 경기를 했던 사람으로 기억되었으면 좋겠다. 나를 도와준 가족, 코치진, 팀 동료들에게 감사하다."라고 덧붙였다.
Wiz는 황재균의 은퇴식을 다음 시즌 초에 개최할 예정이다.
