Hanwha Engine announced on Friday its plans to acquire Seam AS, a Norwegian company specializing in shipboard electric propulsion systems, marking the first entry of a South Korean firm into the maritime technology market in Northern Europe.
The marine engine manufacturer, part of Hanwha Group, has agreed to purchase the entire stake in Seam AS for approximately 290 billion won (US$196.6 million).
Seam AS, located in Avaldsnes, is recognized as a leading developer of zero-emission maritime solutions, including control software and energy storage systems (ESS) for ships.
Norway is noted for its proactive adoption of electric propulsion ships, with Seam AS holding about a 40 percent share of the country's maritime market.
Hanwha Engine aims to broaden the range of maritime propulsion solutions offered by Seam AS through this acquisition, in response to the increasing demand for eco-friendly vessels.

노르웨이는 전기 추진 선박의 가장 활발한 도입 국가 중 하나로 여겨지며, Seam은 노르웨이 해양 시장에서 약 40%의 점유율을 보유하고 있다.
한화엔진은 이번 인수를 통해 해양 추진 솔루션의 범위를 확장하고 친환경 선박에 대한 증가하는 수요에 대비할 계획이라고 전했다.
