South Korea's top military officer held a meeting with key field commanders on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for "overwhelming" capabilities to address threats posed by North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile programs, according to officials.
Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Gen. Jin Yong-sung presided over the meeting, which included approximately 170 key officials and commanders. The discussions focused on assessing the current security environment and strategies to enhance military readiness for potential conflict.
Jin highlighted that North Korea's development of nuclear and missile technology, along with the modernization of its conventional weapons, presents a "grave challenge" to peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the broader region.
In response to these threats, Jin directed the maintenance of strong deterrence capabilities to ensure a swift overpowering of the enemy in the event of war, while also preparing "overwhelming capabilities" for immediate response under any circumstances.
