A memorial space for the late veteran actress Kim Ji-mee was established at the Seoul Film Center on Saturday.
Kim Ji-mee will posthumously receive the highest class of Korea's cultural decoration in recognition of her lifelong contributions to the Korean film industry, as announced by the culture ministry on Sunday.
Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young plans to visit the memorial at the Seoul Film Center later in the day to confer the Golden Order of Cultural Merit.
Kim, who had reportedly suffered from heart problems, passed away last Sunday at the age of 85 in Los Angeles, where she had been residing.
The ministry described her as a "symbol of the film culture of an era," highlighting her combination of popular appeal and artistic depth, and acknowledged her significant role in the Korean film industry.
According to the ministry, "She contributed to laying the foundation of Korean film production and supporting the industry's growth, and played a practical role in protecting the Korean film ecosystem and strengthening its institutional framework."
In 2016, Kim received the Silver Order of Cultural Merit, the second-highest class of the nation's cultural decoration.
She made her screen debut in the 1957 film "The Twilight Train," directed by Kim Ki-young, and gained fame the following year with "The Star in My Heart" by Hong Seong-ki.
Kim earned critical acclaim for her work with leading filmmakers such as Kim Soo-yong and Im Kwon-taek, winning multiple awards both domestically and internationally.
Beyond her on-screen contributions, which included more than 700 films, Kim founded the production company Jimi Film and served as a member of the Korean Film Council.

문화부는 그녀를 "한 시대의 영화 문화의 상징"으로 묘사하며, 대중적인 매력과 예술적 깊이를 함께 지닌 인물이라고 평가했다. 또한 그녀는 한국 영화 산업에서 의미 있는 역할을 했다고 덧붙였다.
문화부는 "그녀는 한국 영화 제작의 기반을 다지고 산업 발전을 지원하는 데 기여했으며, 한국 영화 생태계를 보호하고 제도적 틀을 강화하는 데 실질적인 역할을 했다"고 말했다.
김 여배우는 2016년에는 문화 공로 은관 훈장을 수여받았다.
그녀는 1957년 김기영 감독의 영화 "황혼열차"로 스크린 데뷔를 했으며, 이후 홍성기 감독의 "내 마음의 별"로 단번에 유명세를 얻었다.
김 여배우는 김수용, 임권택과 같은 한국의 주요 감독들과 협력하여 비평가의 찬사를 받으며 국내외에서 여러 상을 수상했다.
그녀는 700편이 넘는 영화 작업 외에도 제작사 지미필름을 설립하고 한국영화위원회의 일원으로 활동하며 영화 산업에 기여했다.
