A special counsel team is set to announce the results of its investigation into insurrection charges related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol this week. The announcement is anticipated following a months-long probe into the controversial imposition of martial law in December 2024.
Over the past six months, the investigation has led to the indictment of Yoon and 23 others for their alleged roles in the martial law declaration. The special counsel has also collaborated with military prosecutors to indict three additional military officials.
During the investigation, investigators sought arrest warrants in 11 cases, with courts approving five of those warrants.
Special counsel Cho Eun-seok is scheduled to provide a public briefing on Monday, marking the first such announcement since the investigation began on June 18.
Notably, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was indicted just six days after the investigation commenced, while Yoon was taken into custody on July 10, approximately four months after his release from detention.
In addition to his earlier indictment for leading an insurrection, Yoon faces additional charges of aiding the enemy. He is accused of ordering the dispatch of drones to North Korea prior to the martial law declaration, allegedly to provoke retaliation from the North and create a pretext for the martial law.
Former Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min was indicted in August while in custody for allegedly ordering the suspension of electricity and water supplies to media organizations.
Ex-National Intelligence Service chief Cho Tae-yong has also been arrested on charges related to violations of the NIS law in connection with the martial law declaration.
Requests for arrest warrants for several senior officials linked to Yoon's martial law, including former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, former ruling party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, and former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, were denied by the courts.

전 국방부 장관 김용현은 조사 시작 six일 만에 기소되었으며, 윤 전 대통령은 구치소에서 석방된 지 약 4개월 후인 7월 10일에 체포되었다.
윤 전 대통령은 군사령 부과 시도가 반란을 주도한 혐의로 검찰에 의해 이미 기소되었으나, 특별검사는 그에게 적을 돕는 혐의를 추가로 적용하여, 선언 몇 달 전 북한에 드론을 파견하라는 지시를 내렸다고 주장했다.
조사관들은 또한 윤 전 대통령에게 권력 남용 혐의를 부여하며, 이 조치가 북한의 보복을 유도하고 군사령 부과의 전제로 사용하기 위한 것이라고 주장했다.
전 행정안전부 장관 이상민은 언론 기관에 대한 전기와 수돗물 공급 중단을 지시한 혐의로 구속 상태에서 기소되었다.
전 국가정보원(NIS) 원장 조태용도 군사령부 선언에 연루된 혐의로 NIS 법 위반 혐의로 체포되었다.
윤 전 대통령의 군사령 부과와 관련된 다른 고위 관계자들인 한덕수 전 국무총리, 주경호 전 국민의힘 원내대표, 박성재 전 법무부 장관에 대한 구속영장 청구는 기각되었다.
