Korean snowboarder Yu Seung-eun has secured her first career World Cup medal in the women's big air event, achieving silver at the International Ski Federation Snowboard World Cup in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on Saturday.
Yu earned a total of 173.25 points, narrowly missing the gold medal, which was claimed by Japan's Miyabi Onitsuka with a score of 174.00 points. Australia’s Ally Hickman rounded out the podium in third place with 162.25 points.
At just 17 years old, Yu had a standout performance, recording the second-highest score of the qualification phase with 89.75 points, and she maintained this strong form to secure her podium finish. This achievement marks Yu as the first Korean snowboarder to medal in big air at the World Cup level.
Big air made its Olympic debut during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games, where snowboarders perform aerial tricks off a single large jump, with scoring based on difficulty, execution, height, distance, and landing.
Yu is the second Korean snowboarder to win a World Cup medal in a short span, following 17-year-old Choi Gaon, who claimed the women's halfpipe title in China just two days earlier, indicating a promising future for Korea in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February.
Historically, Korea has won only one Olympic medal in snowboarding: a silver medal awarded to Lee Sang-ho in the men's parallel giant slalom at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
