The financial regulator announced on Wednesday that it will conduct an emergency on-site inspection of major card issuer Shinhan Card, following the company's report of a significant data leak involving partnered merchant operators' information.
The Financial Services Commission (FSC) indicated that if any personal financial information is found to be compromised, such as bank account details, it will implement prompt follow-up measures in accordance with relevant laws. This was stated during a meeting held at their administrative office in Seoul.
Additionally, the FSC mentioned that it may extend the inspection to other financial companies if deemed necessary and will enforce strict actions should any serious shortcomings in their security systems be discovered.
This decision follows Shinhan Card's announcement of a data breach that potentially affected over 190,000 cases of business and personal data of partnered merchant operators.
Shinhan Card clarified that the breach was not a result of hacking but stemmed from misconduct by employees aiming to enhance their recruitment performance. The company further stated that the leaked information consisted only of non-sensitive data, including names, mobile phone numbers, and dates of birth of the merchant operators.

금융위원회는 서울 행정사무소에서 열린 회의에서 "은행 계좌 정보와 같은 개인 금융 정보가 유출된 경우, 관련 법에 따라 신속히 후속 조치를 취할 계획"이라고 밝혔다.
금융위원회는 필요에 따라 다른 금융회사에 대한 점검도 확대하고, 그들의 보안 시스템에 심각한 문제가 발견될 경우 엄중한 조치를 취할 것이라고 덧붙였다.
이번 조치는 신한카드가 190,000건 이상의 제휴 가맹점 사업자와 개인 정보가 유출되었다고 보고한 이후에 이루어졌다.
신한카드는 이 데이터 유출이 해킹으로 인한 것이 아니라, 신규 채용 성과를 높이려는 직원들의 불법 행위와 관련이 있다고 전했다.
이 회사는 유출된 정보가 가맹점 사업자의 이름, 휴대폰 번호 및 생년월일과 같은 비민감 정보만 포함되어 있다고 밝혔다.
