Members of the Korea Professional Football League’s disciplinary committee held a meeting at the league headquarters in Seoul on November 19, reviewing a controversial “slanted-eye” gesture made by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors assistant coach Mauricio Taricco toward referee Kim Woo-seong during a match.
The Korean football league announced on Monday that it has rejected an appeal by Taricco regarding a penalty imposed on him for an alleged racist action. Following a unanimous decision at its board meeting, the Korea Professional Football League (K League) confirmed it will uphold a five-match suspension and a 20 million-won (approximately US$13,600) fine on Taricco.
The disciplinary committee imposed the penalty on Taricco on November 19 for his actions during a match against Daejeon Hana Citizen FC, which took place 11 days earlier. During the game, Taricco contested referee Kim Woo-seong's decision not to call a handball violation on an opposing player. Initially shown a yellow card, Taricco was later ejected with a red card after continuing to argue, even after a penalty was awarded to Jeonbuk following a video review.
Referee Kim reported the incident to the K League's disciplinary committee, believing that Taricco had made a racist “slanted-eye” gesture. The committee sided with Kim, ruling that Taricco's gesture was indeed racist, despite the coach's claims that he had no such intent and was merely inquiring if Kim had missed the play in real time.
The committee emphasized that the generally accepted meaning of the slanted-eye gesture and Kim's perception of it outweighed the intent claimed by Taricco and Jeonbuk. In rejecting Taricco's appeal, the K League stated that it found no glaring errors in the disciplinary committee's ruling or any new evidence to support Taricco's case.
Following the ruling, Taricco expressed his frustration over being labeled a racist and offered to resign after the current season. The K League's decision has sparked division within the football community, with many fans expressing dissatisfaction with referees and accusing Kim of making unfounded allegations against Taricco, while also criticizing the league for its officiating standards.

경기 중 타리코는 상대 선수에 대한 핸드볼 반칙을 부르지 않은 김우성 심판의 판정에 항의했으며, 그는 처음에는 옐로우 카드를 받았고, 이후 비디오 판독 후 전북에 핸드볼 반칙이 주어지자도 계속 항의하여 레드 카드로 퇴장당했다.
김 심판은 이를 인종차별적인 “찢어진 눈” 제스처로 간주하여 사건을 K리그 징계위원회에 보고했다. 위원회는 타리코가 의도하지 않았다고 주장했음에도 불구하고, 해당 제스처를 인종차별적 행동으로 판단하여 김 심판의 손을 들어주었다.
위원회는 찢어진 눈 제스처의 일반적인 의미와 김 심판이 이를 인지한 방식이 타리코와 전북이 주장한 코치의 의도보다 우선한다고 밝혔다.
타리코의 항소를 기각하며 K리그는 징계위원회의 판결에 명백한 오류가 없으며 타리코의 사례를 뒷받침할 새로운 사실이 정당화되지 않았음을 발표했다.
인종차별자로 낙인찍힌 것에 불만을 품은 타리코는 지난 화요일 이번 시즌 종료 후 사퇴의사를 밝혔다.
K리그의 결정은 축구 커뮤니티 내에서 논란이 되고 있으며, K리그 심판들에 대해 불만이 많은 팬들은 타리코의 제스처가 분명히 인종차별적이지 않았음에도 불구하고 김 심판이 근거 없는 주장을 했다고 비난하고, 리그가 심판의 질을 개선하지 않은 점도 비판하고 있다.
