Korean bobsleigh pilot Kim Jin-su led his four-man team to a World Cup bronze medal in November on the same Italian track that will host the Winter Olympics next year. Kim and his teammates are now focused on ensuring they have not peaked too early.
Kim, along with pushmen Kim Sun-wook and Kim Hyeong-geun, and brakeman Lee Geon-u, secured their bronze medal in the four-man competition at the first International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup of the season in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, on November 23. This marked Korea's first podium finish in the four-man bobsleigh event at a World Cup.
"We were elated when we won that bronze medal in Cortina d'Ampezzo, but we also wished that competition were the Olympics," Kim stated upon returning to Incheon International Airport after the World Cup season. "We won't be content with this World Cup bronze. We will keep addressing our shortcomings and try to put on a perfect race at the Olympics."
Subsequent performances by Kim's team indicated that there is still work to be done before the Olympics. Following their success in Italy, the team finished in seventh, sixth, and 14th places in the next three World Cup races.
A German team piloted by Johannes Lochner has dominated the World Cup events, winning three of the four competitions so far, while another German team led by Francesco Friedrich has one victory and three additional podium finishes. A third German squad, piloted by Adam Ammour, has achieved four consecutive top-five finishes, including a bronze and a silver medal in the last two events.
Despite the mixed results in subsequent races, Kim emphasized the importance of mastering the Cortina d'Ampezzo track. "It's a challenging track," he remarked. "Some parts may seem easy but are actually difficult, and vice versa in some other areas."
Kim Hyeong-geun, one of the pushmen, noted that while the team has improved their starts, they have not yet reached their peak performance. "At the Olympics, we will try to have even faster starts than those three German teams," he stated.
To prepare, the bobsledders plan to continue their training during the Christmas break. "I am supposed to do some weight training on Christmas Eve," Kim Jin-su mentioned. "Even during the World Cup break, I won't be taking much time off."
Kim Hyeong-geun added with a smile, "Since I am competing with Jin-su on the same team, I have to keep up with the weight training. I am going to be in the gym not just on Christmas Eve, but on Christmas, too."

김진수는 “코르티나 담페초에서 동메달을 따냈을 때 기뻤지만, 그 경쟁이 올림픽이었으면 좋았겠다는 생각도 있었다”며 “우리는 이번 월드컵 동메달에 만족하지 않을 것이다. 우리의 부족한 점을 계속 보완하고 올림픽에서 완벽한 경기를 펼치겠다”고 기자들에게 밝혔다.
김의 팀은 올림픽을 앞두고 많은 준비가 필요하다는 것을 보여줬다. 이탈리아 대회 이후, 김의 4인조 팀은 다음 세 번의 월드컵 경기에서 7위, 6위, 14위를 기록했다.
요하네스 로흐너가 조종하는 독일 팀이 현재까지 열린 네 개의 월드컵 대회 중 세 개에서 우승했으며, 프란체스코 프리드리히가 이끄는 또 다른 독일 팀은 한 번의 우승과 세 번의 포디움 피니시를 기록했다.
세 번째 독일 팀은 아담 아무르가 조종하며, 최근 두 대회에서 각각 동메달과 은메달을 포함해 네 번 연속 5위 안에 진입했다.
김진수는 다른 월드컵 대회에서 더 나은 성적을 내고 싶지만, 현재 코르티나 담페초 트랙을 익히는 데 집중하고 있다고 말했다.
“도전적인 트랙이다. 일부 구간은 쉬워 보이지만 사실 어렵고, 반대의 경우도 있다”고 그는 덧붙였다.
푸시맨 중 한 명인 김형근은 자신과 팀원들이 스타트에서 얼마나 큰 발전을 이루었지만 아직 최고 조준에 도달하지 못했다고 전했다.
“올림픽에서는 세 개의 독일 팀보다 더 빠른 스타트를 시도할 것”이라고 그는 덧붙였다.
이 목표를 위해 봅슬레 선수들은 크리스마스 휴일 동안에도 체육관을 찾을 계획이다.
김진수는 “크리스마스 이브에 웨이트 트레이닝을 할 예정”이라고 말했다. “월드컵 휴식 기간 동안에도 많은 시간을 쉬지 않을 것이다.”
김형근은 미소 지으며 “진수와 같은 팀에서 경쟁하기 때문에 웨이트 트레이닝을 함께 해야 한다. 크리스마스 이브뿐만 아니라 크리스마스 날에도 체육관에 갈 것”이라고 말했다.
