A 3,200-ton Miguel Malvar-class frigate, the BRP Diego Silang, the second vessel delivered by a major South Korean shipbuilder to the Philippine Navy in October this year, has recently undergone sea trials.
Korea has secured a contract worth approximately 850 billion won ($587 million) to supply two frigates to the naval forces of the Philippines, as announced by the state arms procurement agency on Friday.
Under this agreement, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., a leading shipbuilder in South Korea, will construct two 3,200-ton frigates and is expected to deliver them to the Philippine Navy by 2029, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
This latest contract follows the previous acquisition of two frigates by the Philippine armed forces under an earlier agreement in 2016. The two Jose Rizal-class guided-missile frigates were successfully delivered in 2020 and 2021 and are currently operational, as reported by DAPA.
DAPA emphasized that this recent deal reflects the government's proactive "sales diplomacy" and highlights the competitive advantages of South Korean defense firms, particularly their robust maintenance, repair, and overhaul support capabilities.

이번 계약에 따라 국내 주요 조선업체인 HD 현대중공업이 3,200톤급 프리깃 두 척을 건조하여 2029년까지 필리핀 해군에 인도할 예정이다.
이번 계약은 한국에서 제작된 무기 시스템이 필리핀 군대의 주요 장비로 자리매김하고 있는 가운데 이루어졌다. 필리핀은 2016년 첫 계약을 통해 두 척의 호세 리잘급 유도 미사일 프리깃을 도입했으며, 이들 프리깃은 2020년과 2021년에 각각 인도되어 현재 서비스 중이라고 DAPA는 전했다.
DAPA는 이번 계약이 정부의 적극적인 "세일즈 외교"와 한국 방산 기업의 경쟁력, 그리고 강력한 유지보수 및 수리 지원 능력의 결과로 평가했다고 밝혔다.
